John, does the Denso injector pump on this engine also have a small mesh screen inside the banjo fitting on the intake line to the pump? .

Yes;)

Hi everyone,

It appears that the timing belt jumped at cog on the crank shaft and that is what has been causing the problem.

I now have a new problem. The crank pulley, which was just replaced because it had been broken, has a crack in the key way. Apparently the replacement key wasn't quite wide enough and the play has caused a fatigue crack through the keyway. We're going to attempt a weld of the crack and then sweating a collar on the outside of the pulley to prevent it from happening again.

Anybody had the same problem?

Sometimes the weld last, sometimes it doesnt. Is it possible to have a new key way cut into the opposite side of the pulley?

i have a pulley sitting here off a 2LTE (and a crap load of other engine parts) if you need one.

Thanks Wayne,

A new, previously enjoyed, pully might do the trick. The concern I have is that the key way on the crankshaft has been made larger as well. Is there a way of dealing with this too? Maybe grinding it out? And then using a larger key?

I'm glad you found the timing belt to be off a tooth. I had the same symptoms with my 2LTE - same code 12 even. When I pulled the Crank Sensor out I found that somehow the little can that covers the wires came un-soldered and apparently hit the crank and was floating around in the oil pan. Needless to say the sensor was completely destroyed... no need to diagnose that one electrically!

I found a surplus sensor, plugged it in, reset codes and viola! It was like having a new engine. The engine just limped along before because the Fuel system needs that data to meter fuel properly. Anyway, glad to learn that a timing belt can give the same symptoms. I'll remember that one.

My mechanic was surprised that it would run on one cog out. He figured it should have been dead in the water.

The engine runs great now but I have to get a new thermostat now that we're down to -10C here in the morning. The heater blows about as warm as a babys breath.
