Just wanted a diesel (crushers). This is why the forum is here, so other people can learn.

Don't take it too hard. For Crushers, his hate on the 2LTE is very personal. He's a good guy with lots of know how but a bit short on diplomacy. :hillbilly: But his advice is usually sound but often bitter medicine.

If you really want a Toyota diesel 4x4, pop a 22RE back in your old truck. Sell it and buy a decent 25 year old JDM or Australian Land Cruiser. It'll cost you some decent coin but it will likely be cheaper than a more difficult engine swap in the long run. You could also consider buying a rust free FJ60/62 in the US and swapping in a JDM 12HT. Best thing is to buy a half-cut JDM so you have everything you will need for the swap.

Sounds good...hopefully that swap is a little less involved although I don't mind work. I just don't want to set myself up for failure. We have 2 fj-40s in the family both with 2f's less than 40K miles and my mini truck, I sold my fj. Still wanna go the diesel route.............thanks for your help! Everyone's been great!

Sounds to me that your thermostat is shot and is not closing at all. If you are not getting up to the proper operating temp, then you are causing other problems.

Nope, it gets to operating temperature, just not at idle. T-stat has been replaced a couple times for various reasons, mine has just always idled really cool.

For giggles this morning, I had an idle off. It was -6 F, and I started the FJ-60 and the faux-lux at the same time. Neither got up to the point the thermostat opened in the 20 minutes I let them idle, but the 60 got the needle moving quicker, and the air coming out of the heater was significantly warmer from the 60.

yah, i found similar with the few LJ78/LJ71 vehicles i have owned. they got to operating temp in relativily short order idling.
-6F? that is pretty cold for that area, eh?

... (2LT pump will probably work). Calibrate it on the conservative side of things, crank the boost, install an intercooler, pyrometer and boost gauge. Run a HUGE cooling system, and save up to buy a new head if the engine was from a JDM...

and watch it take a s*** anyway after 50,000 miles just like i did...

put it in anyway. when (not if) it craps out, instead of throwing good money after bad by relpacing the head, scrap the thing except for the turbo and manifolds and get a 3l engine. drop-in replacement, 2lte turbo and manifolds will bolt-on. i got mine for ~$3,000 including shipping: JDM Used Toyota 3L Diesel Engine for Pickup, 4 Runner - eBay (item 270685043101 end time Jan-03-11 16:57:15 PST)

replacing the head is going to run you $1,500+, and it's likely you'll just run into the same problem again down the road anyway.

This one has always been consistent like this, and I appear to have the world's only OK 2LT-E. ;)

-6F is a bit cold (but definitely not unheard of), although it was -17F when I left the house this morning. I got up, started the faux-lux, then went in, made breakfast, showered and shaved, emptied the kitty litter, filled the kitties' food... it wasn't hot when I went to drive away 35 minutes later, but it was relatively balmy feeling with what heat it did have. My stock needle was roughly halfway between cold and the normal position.

I should add that at -17 out, the faux-lux was like a frikken Porsche going up Floyd Hill! Normally I go up at around 50mph to keep the EGTs down. This morning I did 65 mph and had less than 900 degree EGTs.

i dont know if youve changed away from the 2lte but oh well. i have a surf with factory fitted 2lte. everyones saying it will blow up etc etc. im sure there are MANY examples that crack heads but it doesnt mean yours will. 4 of my friends own 2lte luxs, only one has cracked the head and its the only one thats stock as a rock and is only driven on road like a nanna. mine is currently boosting 15psi with a 2.5 inch exhaust and a snorkel and i THRASH IT. ive not had a single problem with the enginethe hole time ive owned it. ive blown diffs, gearboxes and CVs but the engine is still beautiful. I go offroading at least twice a month an its great! On the road in the wet ill spin up my 33s through 2nd gear so its not completly gutless eather. Hey maybe i lucked out with my one and got the best one ever made, but dont shoot yourself in the foot about buying the 2lte, u may get a good one!

oh and i dont know if you guys get them over there but we have heaps here, 1KZ-TE? 3ltr turbo deisel? ive heard these are much better than the 2ltes but ive not had experience with one

:clap::wrench: Go the 2lte!

some people do love those gutless, fuel thirsty little engines ...
and then some of us would rather have a real engine under the bonnet.

And that is why you have never been invited to be the guest speaker at the annual LJ78 fan club meeting,:)
