2f vs F motor whats what?

I hope this is not too elementary of a question, I did search but did not find one solid answer or illustration.

Here goes…We took delivery of a project rig last night. I was told it was a '78 40. so I assumed that it had the 2 F motor in it.

When we looked at the door plate, the tub said it was built in '73 and I thought I remembered reading here, that the 2F was not put into the 40's until '74. There is also evidence that some other parts have been swapped out in the past so I can't tell what is original and what is not.

so with the door plate saying '73 but being told by the P.O that it was a 78, I am not sure what motor is actually in the FJ.

If I was just going to put this on the trail. I would insert a V8 of some kind into it and be done. But we are going to do a resto/mod on it for my daughter so I would like to get the original motor running. But I do not want to even buy one spark plug without knowing for sure what motor is under the hood (I made that mistake once before with an old Ford I bought…rebuilt the entire motor thinking it was one thing and it turned out to be a little brother of what I thought=bent crank)

So how can I tell the difference between the two motors? is there any illustrations/photos comparing the two? any little gimicks to look out for such as oil filter placement or freeze plug amount?

Oh :doh:! here is a photo of our motor, maybe someone can tell me what we got? but I would still like to know how to tell the difference

So the F has the oil filter on the opposite side? and a steel valve cover?

and what shape were the F air filters?

This probably won't help, but I have a 2F with a bunch of F components like the air cleaner and fan. See below, the top one is from 10 years ago and the bottom one is from last month. So, it looks like you may have a 2F. Does it say 2F on the valve cover?

It was too dark by the time we got it unloaded and in it's own place. and my flash lights were not where they were suppose to be (darn kids). So I couldn't really see the valve cover markings.

Anyway after work today. i was going to look hard at the engine bay so I wanted to get a head start on what to look for! I'll look at the valve cover markings, but by Coolerman's description and everyone's confirmations. I think I got my answer!

again I appreciate all the great wealth of information! the generous sharing of it! I have found a new home!
 
Not to confuse you too much but here is a way to roughly identufy USA gas powered FJ40 engines:

Early F engines 58-3/69 had the oil filter cannister mounted on the drivers side. This is NOT a screw on filter but a big ass container.

Late F engines 3/69- 9/73 got a normal screw on type oil filter that mounted to the intake manifold.

2F engines moved the oil filter to the passenger side. SOme had oil coolers some did not.

You can get the serial number off the engine and look it up to see exactly when your engine was made.

I also knew that "accessory" items such as air cleaners could be changed so I was hoping for a definitive piece of info such as what you just gave me!

This thread got me thinking and I just looked up my 2F engine #. It is 2F859557. I then looked at the 2F engine # thread as well as the Spector website and I have come to the conclusion that my block is not a 1975 as the PO indicated. Is it possible that I have a mid 1980's block based on that #??

can you explain the F1/2? never heard of that one
 
Ya I Got A F 155 And The Oil Filter Is In The Same Place. I Believe That 2f Had More Complicated Emissions

First, look on the metal flat spot on the passenger side engine near the distributor above the starter. There will be an engine number stamped there, and it will either begin with F or 2F.

An F 1/2 will have the passenger side integral oil filter, and it has the nonbypass oiling of a 2F engine. It has the somewhat smaller displacement of an F engine, and it will have the F...... engine number stamped on the plate, rather than 2F. That should get you there.

I don't know about your door plate, but everything I see under your hood is exactly the same as my '78 including the smog parts and hoses, canister, brake parts, carb wiring connections and the carb fan.

I don't know what kind of mods you're planning, but don't toss any of those parts. :)

thanks for the heads up on the smog parts. Our initial plan is to just get it running again. Then afterwards decide what needs to be done to the motor.

I would like to remove all the smog stuff but I don't want to sacrifice any of the engines performance (some how that statement seems condrictory)
