I wan't to rebuild the original six instead of a V8. Is there good shop in the area that will rebuild it? Would I need it balanced and blueprinted for original Toyota reliability?

What is balanced and blueprinted. When I had to replace a blown engine in a 74 FJ40. We pulled the old one out, used the headers on a new block and put it back in adjusting the valves, dist, and a few other things. Not familiar with those terms?
Did you try calling engine shops and asking? We actually have a section in the YP called engines.

Had mine rebuilt there in Houston. It was pricy though, I went through Fred Haas on N 45 just north of FM1960. Haven't had a problem with it yet (knock on wood). Not really even any leaks from the engine. I have a few other seals to replace in the tranny, but that will come with the rebuild.

Good luck!

I am continually amazed at what a few words in a search engine can bring back on the net...

Call Javier Ibarra at Javier's Autos Unlimited 713-461-5595 located at 9443 Clay Road Houston 77080. He is a Land Cruiser driver and a Honest and inexpensive wrench. He is a member of TLCA's local Houston Chapter. He fabricated a new cross member mount for my FJ62 when I converted it to the H55F 5 speed. We wound up spending about 5 hours working on my truck and he only charged me $200. He is very knowledgable on all models of Crusiers and works on many of the local chapter guys rigs. Shoot me a message if you want more info on him.

Hey cajun do you live in Houston? A good friend on the 3FE list and I are the only regulars I know of in the Houston area and we help each other out a lot. Get in touch if you want to talk cruisers or hoist beers.

Thanks Steve. That I knew you had to do. I thought you just called it machining and matching pieces to fit.

Thanks for the info. I live in Houston but still have the Cruiser in LA. No space to store parts. Getting everything ready to install all at once during my weekends.

Cajun and Dunbar,

I'm a regular on this board and a Houston (Tomball) resident as well. Always interested in having a cold beer with fellow Cruiser owners, so let me know when you are up for it.

I'm afraid that I'm approaching the need for a rebuild on my 2F as well. Got a nasty knocking noise that I fear is the crank bearing, and some blow-by. I seem to be finding oil residue in the air cleaner housing, even after replacing the PCV Valve. I've got a friend that mentioned a shop here in town that did some really good work for him. I'll try to get the name from him and pass it on to you. I think it is in the I-45 and Little York area. Maybe we could get a volume discount? ;)

Thanks, I work at Champion Toyota but can't get them to rebuild it or get me a remaned engine.

Hi 78 FJ40,

I live in Tomball too! Near Spring Cypress and Eldridge Parkway in Lakewood Forest. I will be installing an overbored throttle body on my FJ62 this Saturday shoot me a message if you want to drop by and have a beer.

Cajun,

Here is the name of the place that was recommended to me for an engine rebuild here in Houston.

Joey's Engine's & Engine Parts
Address: 1127 W 34th St, Houston, TX 77018
Phone: (713) 880-0448

Dunbar,

Got a small party to go to Saturday afternoon between 2:00 and 4:00, but could swing by before or after depending on what time you are talking about. Let me know! I'm no more than 1 mile from you - I live in The Park at Glen Arbor on Spring Cypress.

78, I will be working on it in the morning and hopefully be done by 2pm. Drop by if you get a chance. 3rd street south of Spring Cypress on N Eldridge is New Hampton, turn right or west and go through 2 all way stops. The first street on your right after the second stop is Carlton Vale Ct. We are in the 9 o'clock position of the Cul de sac circle at 16419. Give me a call so I can learn your name. That way I do not have to tell the wife that 'some guy who drives a 78 FJ40 might drop by' but could be armed with a name.

Erik,

Major fubar on my part. Saturday is my wifes birthday so the wrenching will have to wait until Sunday and I have hired help for the wife to handle the babies so there will be limited interuption to wrenching.

I plan on installing the overbored throttle body, adjust the throttle position sensor, install a new fuel pressure regulator, clean out the intake manifold with B&G intake cleaner, drain flush and fill the radiator with Guyana Red (OEM) coolant, replace rear seat heater hoses, change oil, retorque head bolts, adjust valves, set timing, and check compression. Or as much as I can get done. :-\

Of couse I allways partake in cold  to enshure operational integrety.

Would be great if you could drop by.

David

I used to go to school in Tomball, ever head of Concordia High on Main St. I wish i knew you guys then, Oh Well.
Jesse

Dunbar,

No problem. Sunday works better for me anyway. What time? Adjusting the valves will be a learning experience as will checking the compression. Sounds like a good day of wrenching. :D

Baby sitter arrives at 10am and I should be underway by 11am. Drop by anytime.

Dunbar

Don't know if you've found the right guy or not, but the only person I let touch my cruiser is Tom Borrow. He's got a shop called "offroad" on westhiemer near west oaks mall. Hes a knowledgable guy, and has done just about anything you can name with fj40's and 55's. He's currently working on my 67 40.. and I think about three more 40's and his own 55... hes a cool guy. You should look him up :D
