If ya don't know, I ain't tellin'
Maybe just the cold, but my P/S pump may be on its last legs. I'd rather not fork out the dough for new OEM, so I was considering rebuilding my pump. Here's what the SOR website says:

"Specter does not offer rebuilt power steering pumps. The original Toyota front pump body does not have a replaceable bushing in it. To rebuild the pump correctly, the housing needs to be machined for a bushing and the bushing needs to be honed to match the pump shaft. Rebuilding these pumps this way would make the cost of the remanufactured pump comparable to the new Toyota pump."

Is this BS? Can the pump be rebuilt, and if so, what's the best route?

Or is there another option?

(And Butch, I searched for this, but after sitting staring at the screen for ten minutes while the search function creeped along, I decided just to post the damn question.)

Jman,
What they are saying is true. :( What is wrong with your pump? My '84 was leaking fluid all over the place last year. I took it apart replaced the seal and threw it togather again. It's still working fine a year later and I drive it nearly every day!
They can be a bit of a pain to separate.

What seal did you replace? Where was it located on the pump?

interesting, the 3fe pumps can be re-sealed with a OEM kit........and the pump doesn't look all that much different then a 2f pump ???

Shaft seal behind the drive pulley. There is only that one plus an "O" ring on the resevour. It's not complicated at all. Mine likely has too much play in the shaft but hey, it's my beater truck.

The pump reseal kit is an 04446-30010. It is used for all OEM 2F pumps. It lists for $54.43

why not just go to a saginaw unit?

It's leaking fluid (not entirely sure where) and has been making noises (even when fluid is full) and it seems not to be helping much when it's cold or even sometimes when it's really hot.

Maybe it just needs new seals. I was thinking of picking up a used one and rebuilding it "just in case" but if it's just seals maybe I'll just redo those.

Thanks for the input, guys.

P.S. How much is the Saginaw setup? I'm a cheap bastid.

You can go the seal kit route on the pump as mentioned by others, its somewhat of a crap shoot -- may fix your leaks and you get off cheap or you may waste $50.

Two "easy" seals to check are the one between the resevoir and pump (SOR part #099-90A), and there is actually a seal (SOR part #099-15A) that fits in a "saddle" on the main bolt that fastens the resevoir to the pump. Fluid can leak out this front bolt area if that seal gets buggered. I found that when my pump was rebuilt with the seal kit and the resevoir attached that this seal had gotten smashed.

If you are getting noise and vibration after re-installing your pump then you may just have air in the lines. Also, I'm not sure how big a difference it makes, but you are using ATF fluid, not PS fluid, correct (I made this mistake)...

Yeah, I'm using Dexron ATF fluid.

I might have a leak on one of the hoses in addition--it's hard to tell exactly where it's coming from, since it's not a lot right now, my engine is pretty greasy, and it's still damn cold outside. Thankfully, the fluid isn't leaking down onto my smog pump, but I want to take care of this before it does.

Cdan, if I need to take the plunge, I'll PM ya.

Thanks.
