I bought my 1987 fj60 a year and a half ago. When I drove it home, it wouldn't idle at all. If the rpms got below 1500 it would die. After messing with the mixture screw and some other tinkering I finally got it to idle, but really rough. I decided to do a rebuild but im not quite sure what im doing. I pulled the carb out and one of the barrels is totally black with caked on carbon. Is this normal?

Look into the throat of the intake manifold... Is there a crack at the bottom ?

Like this (may just be a fine crack)

I was reading about those. Do they work well with an 87? It looks like it doesnt have an ac idle up, do you cap it off?

You use the AC idle up off your carb, I believe.

thats a lot of carbon / soot build up.

I rebuilt the carb in my 2F myself and currently putting back together one from an F engine. not hard just pay attention.

You also need to check that your Fuel Cut Solenoid is getting power when the truck is on.

And Yes you just use the AC idle up from your carb.

Yes thats the one. If you have a desmoged 2f you will also need to ground the other (non 12v) wire back to the carb body to keep the solenoid opened while the truck is on.

I finally got it all rebuilt after a couple of setbacks,(I tried to take out the screws holding on one of the flaps and torqued them off, haha), with only a couple of washers left over. My cruiser runs great and finally idles under 1000 rpm without dying. Now on to the next problem! Thanks for the help
