I tried a search, but to no avail...

On the A/C compressor belt, how tight should the idler pulley/tensioner be against the belt itself? Mine barely touches it, and I think it might be the culprit with some A/C problems I am having. It seems like there is just too much play in the belt.

Can this idler pulley be adjusted? I have loosened every bolt around it and can't seem to get it to tighten or move at all.

Does anyone have a belt diagram that shows this pulley? I have seen the CCOT ones and some others, but none really address this.

Thanks--

I'm assuming you have a 2F with factor ac...

The FSM Chasis and Body manual (#36262E) doesn't cover AC for the 2F. I have a supplemental manual (#36274A) that covers the 2F and shows the idle pulley, but doesn't mention the pulley in compressor removal or installation instructions. The schematic below, from the parts microfiche, implies that the idle pulley position is not adjustable; two bolts are used to bolt the pulley to the compressor mounting bracket.

I don't think mine acutally touches the belt. I route the belt between the compressor pulley and the idle pulley. The compressor belt is tensioned between the compressor and the crank pulley and should be set at 125 pounds (new) or 80 pound (used). I think the idle pulley is just used to keep the belt from flopping off when the compressor engages.

ditto on mine: the idler almost touches the belt. placing a new belt is a snug fit between idler & pully until belt is "in" pully.

I talked to an A/C guy today and he suggested tightening the compressor belt before I work on the compressor or clutch to isolate the problem. If the idler pulley is not adjustable, how do I tighten the compressor belt? I'm not where I can look at it today, but it seems like there may be an adjustment screw that moves the compressor bracket. Does this make sense?

The AC compressor has its own tensioner bolt and pivot, just like the alternator. The idler pulley should just barley touch the belt, if at all. It is just there to help a bit with the belt slop involved with the compressor cycling on and off while the motor is at speed. Its not even that important. (Don't get rid of it by any means) but don't fret to much over it.

Thanks, Kevin.

I tightened the belt and ran the FJ this evening, and I think my compressor is shot. The belt did not slip at all, but the tighter fit made the compressor sound like it was about to explode and shoot something through the roof of my garage.

It is definitely not a loose belt, probably not and bad clutch, and not low refrigerant. I think I am going to replace the compressor before it sends metal shavings all through the system.

Thanks for the info, guys.

Anyone got a compressor?
