I thought the stock tire size was 31 inches? Aren't 285's 33 inch tires?

I'd like to go to the 285/75/16 Nitto Terra Grapplers next set but my spare 275 tire barely fits within the trailer hitch.

Does a 285 fit under there no problem with the hitch?

Musky - It should fit if you have an OEM hitch. If you have an aftermarket hitch I can not confirm. FWIW, I ran a BFG AT 295 in the spare location for years. It would rub on the Pan Hard, but it fit.

285/75/16 ftw.:wrench:
i'm waiting for my tax return to get stock wheels and 285/75/16 tires going:)

Cool, thanks for the info. I really want a slightly bigger tire with a 1 inch lift. I think I can get by with 30mm spacers in the rear and cranking the torsion bars a little. I really don't like the idea of my mileage going down or the speedometer being off but I'll have to make due. :D

I recently put 295/75 16 Terra Grapplers on my 99. I used a 30mm spring spacer in the back and cranked the fronts a little. I paid $50 for the spacers and $50 to have the boots re clamped after they started seeping.

I lost about 1 mpg after the switch from 265/75 16 to 295/75 16. Full size spare fits with no trouble.

Plus it looks boss.

If you're not going offroad you can run 295s. I swapped my 295s onto my new stock rig last week and drove 300 miles, some on mountain roads. But no off road.

That being said, spend the $50 on spring spacers if you're going to run 295s. If you really don't want to run any lift, get 285/75/16s.

Stock clearance while turning with 295s.

Why wait? I'm selling my stocks and 285/75/16 in he classifieds and we are neighbors

Another vote for 285's, not 295's. (that's 75% aspect, r16 there 1407 :)) as has been said above, the height difference is about 1/4". big whoop, not sure that would be the difference ever between "making it" and "not making it," YMMV. But your performance loss with the bigger circumference is actually noticeable, so the same truck will be slower & less efficient with 295's compared to 285's. And both are going to be a big whack to the performance area compared to stock size, just be ready for that. hth!

285s on a bone stock LC with no suspension adjustments. Just running boards removed.

Here's a 285/75/16 on my totally stock rig to show you how it stuffs. I have an OME 2.5" lift that I'm going to put on when I have some down time at work, and at that point I'm thinking this size might look a little small since I likely won't be doing bumpers or putting a ton of weight in the rig.

I'm returning this weekend with new 2006 that has new stock tires on it. I was planning on putting some 285/75/16's on it next week prior to pulling my little 416 to MOAB. I hope to do some exploring in Moab with the 33's on it.

anyone leaning towards any certain brand. I have always used BFG AT's and like the way they drive and handle. Unfortunately I havent ventured out to try anything different. Most commuting back and forth then gonna use for road and camping trips.

Thanks

Here is my lx on 285/75/16 duratracs, 285's are definitely a solid choice. Green-those BFG all terrains are the best all terrains in my opinion...but for an MT, look into the Goodyear wrangler duratracs, I love them compared to my old BFG km1 or nitto terra grapplers.

Second GY DT 285/75/16

So far I love them, will remove running boards soon and enjoy the mountains.

I had GY Duratrac's on my 4runner, loved how they handled the snow and trails in the mountains. I currently have 285's BFG A/T's on the LC and also love how they ride on the highway and handle in the mountains. Does your new '06 have the 18" rims? Or are you putting the 16's on it? Just wondering because the 18's limit your choices of tire significantly.

You know never considered wheel size. I assumed 16's like my current 2000. Hopefully 18's weren't stock.

I've had 295's for 8 to 10 years now and I think 285's would be a better choice. The BFG to 295's are never in stock whereas the 285's are far more common.

I hate how much the fender flares make the the tires look narrow and how far they set...
Because you said this, I think you'd be happier with the 295/75R16. But I would give higher preference to the particular tire model rather than size. There are only a handful of tires in the 295 size.
