Sorry this is the 10001th post on this but.....I have read many threads on this subject but unfortunately none of the pics work on the older threads when you search for it. I'm debating between a Bridgestone Dueler AT Revo in a 285 of a BFG AT KO in a 305. I would really like to see pics so that I can see how they fill out the wheel well. In the readers rides most people were running a 305. Will I be able to tell much of a difference. There is a $200 difference in price. Is $200 worth that extra inch width.
thanks in advance

I have 285s now in a MT/R. i had 305s in the AT/S. I prefer the 305s for the look. they fit perfectly in the wheel well. Not enough difference for $200, I suppose.

Here's two pics about a couple of years apart. Unfortunately, you can really tell the widths because they are from the side.

How many differences can you see? :D

the difference is that the 40 is backward now?
:D

mooker, look for photos of my 285 and stock suspension in the "steel wheels" thread

I like the BFGoodrich AT KOs in the 285. I must because thats what I bought. My main decision points between the two is as follows:
1) I plan on using the existing spare location and the 285's would give me another inch of clearance.
2) Both tires are 33" and the 305's are an inch wider. These would not handle as well in snow.
3) I run 33 BFG's on my FJ40, only the skinny 9.5's. The skinny tires take me everywhere I want to go on the trail. Wider tires are probably better for the rock crawling kind of wheeling. I don't do that.

Hope that helps in your delima. I agonize over the costly purchases like you do.

Mooker -

If you're after pics I've gone back and inserted the pics that were missing from the FAQ tire thread and had been lost during the software switch. I also added an additional pic at post #45 in that thread showing the width from the front.

Lots of people will say go with the 305s, but I never saw the logic in paying much more for 3/4 inch more per tire. When I was comparing prices on MTRs, the difference was between $20 and $25 per tire difference between the 285s and the 305s.

I'm sure there are conditions where the extra inch and a half in total width could come in handy...I just hadn't run across those conditions, I guess...

How the tire performs in the role you have in mind for it seems like a more important factor than how it looks in the wheel well, IMHO, and the difference in this case seems pretty insignificant to me. I went with the 285 Revos because I have a 120 mile CA freeway run to get to where the pavement ends and pig hunting begins, and I don't want to listen to howling tires at 75 mph. I've put about 40K miles on them in 20 months I've had them, including three long trips around the southwest, and they have worn like iron and never let me down. The worst stuff they have seen were God-awful muddy roads, and they crawled through successfully. Just my .02. BigMac

thanks for all the help.... I think the Revo will prob be better on the road which is where I spend most of my time....Ive had the BFG's on my bronco for years and that was an easier decision because they made the only 33x9.5x15 I could find....I might just go with the Revos and save myself some money for the lift....Also like the guy at the tire store told me it would be easier to find a 285 if I was in a pinch (like had a blowout in some backwoods town).....thanks MOJ for fixing those pics in the thread....

Mot,
Somehow I feel that I know you much better now. I could have done without that.

and just to be picky...the title should read
285/75/16 Vs 305/70/16, not
285/70/16 Vs 305/75/16

I'll be going with the Dueler AT Revo's today. 285/75/16. I got the right price. The look is great, and the reviews on them have been excellent.

Brian,

You know I wasn't talking about height, I was talking about "length"! ;) :D

Yes, I usually tell people I'm 5'8" and 1/2.
You know that "1/2" at the end is very important to those of us who are vertically challenged. ;)

Shorty :D

Happy Holiday's to you.
