Looking to get a set of duratracs in 265/70/17 but have heard some mixed reviews on what size will fit in the spare tire location. I have the premium model with KDSS and it looks tight underneath. I was thinking of running a 245/75/17 which would tuck up higher but be the same diameter as a 265/70/17 (31.7) one inch taller than stock 265/60/18 (30.7)

Should I get a smaller sized spare? Like a 31.2 instead of a 31.7? Will running a less than a one inch spare hurt my axles/diff? I know they are open differentials but I am curious if highway use from the trail could do damage. Especially since the truck is full time 4 wheel drive.

Thanks!

My vote is "Yes" it would hurt your drive train.
Personal story: We had a 1991 Previa (Toyota) all-wheel-drive van we purchased new. At one point, just about 1,000 miles shy of the warranty going out, we had to put a spare on. When we purchased it I swapped out the factory wheels with really nice 17" rims and low profile, wide tires but I didn't bother to get a fifth 17" rim and tire as a spare to match the other four. So we put the spare on and not sure how far we went, but we ended up winding up the entire drive train because the spare was a different size diameter than the rims and tires I had on. The repair was somewhere over $3,000 on the drive train. We just scraped by under the warranty and Toyota took care of all the costs.

Lesson learned. Because our GX's are "all-wheel-drive", when I purchased my oversized BFG mud terrains, I had the presence of mind to also purchase a fifth rim and tire of the same size.

My question to myself is: do I rotate ALL five of my tires every time I rotate them? Or can I get by with just rotating the four corners and leave the spare alone? When my four corners start wearing down to, say, almost replacement depth, if I have to use the spare will it affect the drive train?

You and I both, may need to speak to Toyota about that.

javelin I went through many threads and found that you can tuck a 285/70 BFG KO2 in there. I currently run 275/70 17's on our 2016 Trail with KDSS and it works just fine.

is this for a GX or 4runner?

It might have something to do with our third row seats, electronics, inverter, fancier suspension, etc.

All that should be above the frame. I was under my GX and the stock sized tire already darn close the sway bar and touch the rear cross member. 4Runner trail with KDDS should have the same sway bar and rear cross member unless the rear cross member is different.

It’s for a GX...i know the 4runner can fit a 33 under the rear.. I’m hoping I can squeeze a 265/70 with minimal deflating. The cooper AT3 RS 265/70/17 is a 31.4 instead of a 31.7.

I’m not due for tires yet but would love to know your findings when you get your new tires. It looks pretty tight down there because of the frame+factory tow hitch.

285/70/17 fits no problem on a 4Runner with KDSS. I think a 285/75/17 (34") would also fit - but it would be pretty tight. I assume the same fitment on a GX460 with the possible exception of the trailer hitch assembly and the air compressor/manifold thing. The 4Runner hitch is a bolt on assembly to the rear cross member. On the GX it's a larger frame mounted bolt on assembly below the rear frame rail right? So that may interfere at the rear and take up some space depending on how it's designed. I don't know how the air tank would interfere.

Last truck was a 2010 4runner Trail Ed. I fit a 285 MTR under spare location with plenty of room.

New truck is a 13' GX- I fit a 275/65R18 in spare location and it is a super tight fit. At full inflation (32psi), the spare is 1-2mm away from rear sway bar. I have the small class 3 tow hitch mount clearanced the inside edges with angle grinder. It helped but I run deflated down to 20 psi. Still tight but allows sway bar movement. Next phase will be figuring out how to create more space in spare location for 285/17.

Just curious, do you have on-board air or an air bottle to inflate to proper psi if ever you need it?

No tpms warning light with pressure that low?

Also, a few of us run the factory hitch which is much bulkier than the smaller aftermarket kind.

It's very strange that the GX has a smaller spare tire location. I looked through part numbers and they do not share identical frames. They share the same wheel base, and the 4Runner with KDSS frame shares most frame components with the GX. It even has all the clips for the air suspension. But the rear cross member is a different part number. Interestingly GX frame models also change part number by year. So they must have made some sort of changes during the production cycle. You can't buy the side rails separately that I can see, so they may also be about 1" shorter on the GX. Strange. The 4Runner has 3 different frames depending on model.

Yes having had both KDSS models, I can see many of the same parts/specs but the spare tire location is very tight. Working on some solutions.

Thank you, that's exactly what I'm looking for.

BTW the tires is hanging rather low, I probably will try to find a skinnier tire with same diameter for spare.
