I wouldn't go so far as to say that. It all depends on the price of fuel if all you are talking about is fuel cost, and it depends on fuel prices in addition to maintenance cost if your talking about total cost of ownership.

not that it's the source of all truth, etc, etc, but you get the point...

fuel economy diesel v gas.webp

I calculated it was 4-5yrs to realize the savings of the diesel delta, these also don't compare to the larger SportWagen. You can still put the kiddos (car seats) and quite a bit of stuff in the back of a wagon, you can't the compacts you're comparing. The only comparable vehicle was the Subaru Outback Wagon at the time, which wasn't close MPG wise with the AWD.

Check South Florida Craigslist , I paid 14k for a 98 LX 470 with 56k on the clock

Update:

The BMW dealer is buying my X5 back for close to what I payed them before tax and dealer fees. The manager was very understanding. They are looking for a 100 series for me at auction and said they would pass the wholesale price on to me for my troubles. I'm excited to see what pops up and for what price, but I'm not going to be pushed into a truck I don't like. They said vehicles usually go for 10-20% below retail. I'm not to happy about buying a truck I've never driven or seen in person. Hopefully this situation works out.

Sound like the dealer is a class act. Keep us posted and if they come through post the name of the dealer (even though I don't want a BMW)

Hello,
While it is tempting to focus solely on getting the absolute bottom dollar on these trucks, usually with the reconditioning needed (90k, et al) it often cones out a wash. Or worse. Discounting those lucky enough to find a private party sale from the original owner.

I hear you on the BMW. I'm also a big fan, but have had reliability issues as well. My M3 is old enough to avoid most of the electrical and sensor problems associated with the newer cars. It's actually the best classic German car I've owned. It's never left me stranded and I have confidence driving it across country. Hope you get a good price for your X5 and find your LC!

That picture just brought back some wonderful memories. I worked at a BMW dealership after high school and was able to get a great deal on a 97 estoril blue m3 identical to the one you have pictured. Ahh those were the days. I really enjoyed that car. Always wished we got the Euro 3.2 6 cylinder instead of the dumbed down US version but it was still such a great car. I too was a BMWCCA member for close to 10 years.

So I have the dealership searching for 100's at auction. As of yesterday there was literally 5 in the whole country. This is going to take a while.

^ So, did the BMW dealer buy back your X5? @Kochman, glad my photo brought back some good memories. I love my Estoril M3 - it's a keeper. I spent some time in a Euro 3.2 and while it had a lot more top end, it wasn't as torquey as the US motor. Would prefer the Euro for the track, but mine for the twisty back roads.

Well they are saying they are, but I have to find a car to buy from them as a trade. I put a highest offer of $18k (wholesale at auction) on a 2006 LC with 139k miles with no history and a minor fender bender and my bid didn't even come close. Meanwhile, my X5 just shut down again on the way to work in the rain. I just got it back from the shop last week. I'm over it.

Some of you guys definitely got amazing deals.

I bought mine 2K LX470 at car dealer that was going out of business and closing all of the stores through out the PNW. Why people were not buying this particular vehicle because of no Lexus/Toyota maintenance history. But in looking at the car-fax the t-belt had been done twice in 157K miles and the underneath was basically rust free under the last cover the frame and body it looked like it was brand new. This vehicle had been used at a private college as a transportation vehicle for about 3~5 years of its life and all of the previous owners did the maintenance. It was also licensed in Canada and had less than 7K in 2-3 years that it was up there. I think it was a spare vehicle for summer resort in northern BC and they use allot of salt up there in the winter time. I paid 12K for it and I think the dealer wanted to get what he had into it and break even. There are deals out there and you may have to look nationwide to find something that is a diamond in the rough.

a little late to the party but I bet the skid place was replaced because the original one had rusted through. With all that rust on it that makes me think that would be the reason.

Be patient. Being rushed will get you a vehicle you are not happy with.

Update: United BMW bought my X5 back. I had the X5 in my possession for only 4 days in December. It was in the shop the rest of the time. I picked up a black 2004 LC at auction and it will be here next week. Lost some money, but feels good to get rid of X5. Happy New Year.
