Hey guys,

I found a 2004 LC with 112k miles and the dealership is asking $22000. The hood has been replaced and painted and there are some deep scratches on the fender that were touched up, but still visible. The body is rust free, but frame has service rust and it had a new front skid plate for whatever reason I don't know. Everything works and the paint looks great. All other body parts are original with vin. The exhaust manifold was cracked and replaced and there is no clicking from the engine. Timing belt has not been done but I can get the 90k service for $450 total. I really like the way it looks, but they seemed overpriced and unwilling to negotiate. I'm good at negotiating at they aren't coming down. Thoughts?

I just bought a 2000 with 49k miles on it for $19,900. CarMax is tough to negotiate with. It may take a while but great deals do pop up. I waited and watched for about 3 months before finding my LC.

I think that price is a bit high. In my opinion the truck should be pristine for that price. Miles are pretty good, but the scuffs, scrapes and rust are not good.
For reference, I paid ~$23,000 for my 2005 LX with similar miles, no rust and no big visual blemishes like that, and it was at the higher end of the market prices in my area.

Thanks. I've been pretty patient but every LC that pops up in Georgia has been from the north and had rust. Plus, this is the only black one that has been for sale at a dealer other than a 2000 year model. I want to trade my car in since I hate it (2012 X5 50i) and I would like to recoup some taxes paid. I guess it depends on what they'll give me for a trade. I don't want to rush, but I get ideas in my head and it takes over

Another vote for too high. Just over $22k for our '06 LX with 121k miles from private party. If you're looking in that price range extend to '06-'07. I was finding some at around 24k for '06 with 130-150k miles during my search.

I agree, too high. I picked up my 04 with 113K for a tad over 16k and it's flawless on the inside and almost no rust underneath. Check out my introduction thread for a few pictures.
I think I got lucky on the timing also, the selling party had people from California wanting to buy it but I was local and was ready to buy.

I'm curious why you don't like the X5 - have you had some major issues with it? I've owned them in the past and have considered a newer diesel X5.

Thats definitely a northern 100, $22k is way high for that thing.

Im a big fan of BMWs, older ones anyway. Longtime BMWCCA member. But, newer BMWs are a nightmare. All BMWs now have turbos and a billion other things to go wrong. As far as diesel is concerned, with all the govt emission controls they are putting on diesels now, its killing the increased efficiency of the diesel motor, so its not worth the premium over the gasser. Meanwhile, price of gas is going down faster than the price of diesel due to the extra refining that is required to make the government-mandated ULSD and so diesel is going to become increasingly less attractive. Its unfortunate because it seemed diesel was finally starting to take hold in the US market.

This, and keep an eye on the classifieds here on 'Mud. Bought my 2nd vehicle off of 'Mud last week and it is due to arrive this week.

I agree. RUN my 98 has extremely Minimal rust. I cant believe that one is 6 years newer.

Man I feel for the poor bastard that has to do any work (replace OE or aftermarket) on that truck..

That Rust is unbelievably terrible... I would not touch that truck.. LOL..

Keep looking OP, buy the right truck and these things last a LONG time. Don't settle.

So I passed. I agree the price was way to high especially for the condition. They offered me $10,000 below black book trade in for a fair x5!!! Mine is mint with full warranty. My wife has a 06 LX470 and its in perfect condition. The problem is, she won't let me have it. I'll keep looking.

The story on my BMW...I've owned 4 including an M3 and all were bough new and leased. I never had a problem and all have been so fun to drive. Now I spend most of my time camping/kayaking/backpacking with the kids. I thought I wanted another sports car since I already have a LX and a FJ62 so I bought a 400hp "family car." I have bought and sold many cars like most of you have. I've rebuilt engines and have no problems working on a car. The X5 has been the biggest mistake I have ever made on a car and here's why:

2012 x5 50i with M package. I have owned it for under 4 months and so far I have only had it in my possession for 2.5 months. The other 1.5 months it has been at BMW for repairs. 4 fuel inj, intake manifold leak, numerous sensors gone bad, etc. the grand total is over $10k in repairs covered by warranty minus the deductible every time I take it in. The problem is everything is going bad individually so I have taken it in 5 separate times. Each time an Engine Malfunction light comes on. The last time the engine went into limp mode right when I was trying to pass someone and I almost got hit from behind. They repaired that particular issue and the engine malfunction light came on less than 24 hours after I picked it up. I can drive on any road trips with kids because I'm always worried it won't make it. So I'm basically paying a lot of money to spend most of my time at car dealerships and driving loaner cars. These things loose value so quick. I'm not against BMW, but as someone said earlier, all of the new turbo engines have problems.

I'm so tired and I just want another landcruiser so I can drive it forever without any worries like I have my other trucks. I just have to figure out how to loose the least amount of money on my X5. Currently everything is fixed. I would never sell it to anyone unless it was. Karma I guess.

I paid $18K for my '03 with 88K miles earlier this year. Spent most of its life in CA so it was less rusty than rigs that spent their entire lives in New England. I'm very happy with my purchase and the LC. I put my M3 away for the Winter and have been really enjoying the LC as a DD. Especially since gas prices have fallen to $2.72 local to me.

I hear you on the BMW. I'm also a big fan, but have had reliability issues as well. My M3 is old enough to avoid most of the electrical and sensor problems associated with the newer cars. It's actually the best classic German car I've owned. It's never left me stranded and I have confidence driving it across country. Hope you get a good price for your X5 and find your LC!

DogMarley, expand your search window a bit. You will certainly be able to get a much better rig than that at a better price! Glad to hear you passed on that one!
