On the bimmer front, I'm also very sad about the way the marque has progressed. Loved my old BMWs but sad that it looks like I'll never own another one based on the maintenance nightmares.

What a pile.

I bought an 06 with 80K miles that was like new with one owner, serviced every 5k at toyota dealership for only $24,000. That looks like a lot of rust. I looked for years before I bought mine, and fell like thats way overpriced for the condition of vehicle.

Thanks for the opinions. I'm heading to BMW today in hopes that they will buy it back and I can continue my LC search.

As far as diesel is concerned, with all the govt emission controls they are putting on diesels now, its killing the increased efficiency of the diesel motor, so its not worth the premium over the gasser. Meanwhile, price of gas is going down faster than the price of diesel due to the extra refining that is required to make the government-mandated ULSD and so diesel is going to become increasingly less attractive. Its unfortunate because it seemed diesel was finally starting to take hold in the US market.
I'm sorry, this is a total load of crap. There is nothing on modern diesels that is "killing the increased efficiency", they are increasingly scrubbing the emissions but gassers have had cats for how many years? I drove a Jetta SportWagen TDI for a year between my 80 and 100, they are fantastic cars and get great mileage. I've had it since new ('10) and never had a mechanical issue, it gets 35-40MPG consistently. Yes diesel is more expensive, but I paid ~$50 (12 gal tank) to fill it up and could drive 2.5-3 weeks. I make it a week on the $65 it takes to full up my hundy for the same basic commute :(

I like old diesels too, my FJ55 has a ~1800 mile range between fill ups if I fill the main 55 gal and secondary 22 gal tanks :moon: If they sold diesel 100s here I'd own one -

I looked at the same one and decided to pass. They have a lexus lx470 there that is amazing look at it. It was on hold for me but they dicked me over so passed. Dont get kevin taylor as your sales person:)

Not trying to hijack this thread but its not crap. Ever heard of DPFs, DEF, etc... THAT is crap. All these attempts to "scrub emissions", which is stupid to begin with, is adding complexity and more things to go wrong. $$$ The EPA is screwing it all up. Hurting gas mileage, reliability, longevity; thats what made diesels better. On top of that they increase the refining requirements for diesel fuel itself and that keeps its price high. Do the math, man. And do the research, I have. Im a huge fan of diesels and daily drive one; a 7.3 PSD with none of that new CRAP, the last of the great, big, American diesels in my opinion. TDIs are great, no doubt, but I guess Im mainly talking about the big diesels. And don't compare your cars gas mileage with a hundy or any truck or SUV. It all depends on the price of gas vs diesel, at some price point diesel absolutely makes sense, if the reliability of the two motors is the same and you aren't gonna have to sink money into it just to make it run. The price of gas has decreased faster than the price of diesel in the last year.

By the way I can go 900 miles on my factory 44 gallon tank. And if I add another 44 gallon tank, I can go 1800 miles. And if I add two more 44 gallon tanks, I can go 2700! Yay math whoopdeeffindoo

I have a '79 FJ55 Land Cruiser that gets 25MPG, it doesn't matter how many times you multiply it to make it better than 15MPG in my 100. A FJ55 weighs 4030lbs and is a brick in the wind, I can compare that to a 4597lb UZJ100 I think? IDK - I've only owned a dozen or so Cruisers and the hundred is the best of the gas bunch for mileage.

??? You compared your jetta tdi to your hundy. Good luck getting that diesel hundy.

No - I gave my Jetta as an example that new diesels are efficient and reliable. The problem I had with your statement is you said new diesels are less efficient due to emissions. The may be less reliable (time will tell), but not less efficient. I compared my 55 to my 100 ...

Those TDI's are tempting, but I've been long burned by VW / Audi to go back to one. We're having a N'Or Easter today here in New England - high winds and buckets of rain. Roads are flooded. My 4th grader was having her Holiday concert at the State House. Wife and I drove into Boston with total comfort and confidence. Days like these make me really value the safety and reliability of the Hundy. Well worth the extra $ in gas.

Given higher purchase price and increased price per gallon, combined with increased MPG of comparably sized gas vehicles, small car diesels just don't make financial sense, either from a fuel cost, or total cost of ownership standpoint. :( compare a Golf TDI v Corolla v Fit and see...

I just love that a rusty, overpriced LC thread turned into a BMW and then diesel thread. No one at work ever entertains or debates car stuff with me...and my wife always says "whatever". Thank you.

I beg your pardon, you most certainly did compare the amount you pay to fill up the Jetta and how long you can drive it and in the next sentence state how much it costs to drive the hundy for a fraction of the time. Then you bragged about how big your 55s fuel tank(s) are. :meh:

The newer diesels are most certainly less reliable, time has already told. The big ones anyway or anything big enough to power a Land Cruiser, which is what I assumed we were talking about. And, it all started when the EPA got regulation happy with the diesels.

I ask you, why don't they sell those diesel hundys here that you want? Because they can't meet the emission standards of the offing EPA, thats why.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that. It all depends on the price of fuel if all you are talking about is fuel cost, and it depends on fuel prices in addition to maintenance cost if your talking about total cost of ownership.

:deadhorse: ok sorry for the hijack
