here's by psa advice for all 40 and 55 owners. over the years i'v always checked my driveshaft bolts and often times found 1 or 2 loose. would tighten them up and life was good. checked before the 40's only run and everything was tight. didn't check before our annual run and everything was good until it wasn't. had just gotten on the highway in the vicinity of Grant, mt when i started feeling a significant vibration. was running about 70 and started slowing down immediately when it got much worse . figured i had blown the engine and was almost down enough to pull off the highway when things got bad. thankfully it was the rear end yoke that came apart, you can imagined what happened then. thankfully one of our guys was behind me and saw where part of the shaft flew across the road into the ditch. wasn't long until everyone got turned around and got back to where i was and commenting how cool it looked and glad it wasn't their truck it happened to.
the splined end had the end of the splines screwed up after doing a dandy job on my passenger exhaust pipe and cross member. the female end was kind of oblong shaped. i figured i was finished and would be slowly going home in fwd, we got to thinking of options and used a cutoff wheel and took off about a quarter of an inch of spline, then a grinding wheel to bevel it. if we had had a bottle of scotch we might have came up with a better idea but a ball peen hammer seemed to be about the perfect fit so we placed the ball peen end into position and hammered it with another hammer. after several strikes it looked decent especially when it was over 90 degrees with no shade for miles and a 20-30 mph breeze. it didn't want to fit together and was about to give up hope when one of the guys appears with a sledge hammer he had forgot to take out of his truck. figuring we had nothing to lose we place the spline where we hoped was close to the right spot and went to town with the sledge. amazingly it started going together. a few more wacks and it was enough to put it back on the 40 . took off slowly and no vibration, only vibration was when backing off the throttle so off to dillion we went. since no one had a grease gun i had to buy one and greased it up. no more vibration that i can feel so i spent 2 more days running trails. i'm tempted to pull it apart to clean out the grass and dirt and then run it but my gut is telling me that i'd be pushing my luck. the blue plastic like stuff on the splines got significantly removed and i'm told that's not a good thing. sam and i will haul it to townsend for exhaust and muffler work thursday then i'm going to cry and have gus make me another driveshaft. this will be #3 in a year on the 40 but i will be carrying a spare rear ds in my parts kit.
so the reason for this long winded saga of my normal misfortune when i go with these guys is for you guys to check your ds nuts and make sure they're tight. I'll be making a call to cruiser outfitters tomorrow and ordering a new rear yoke that hat a tab broken off and seeing if they have any lock nuts for the toyota bolts. i'll also order some spare bolts just to carry along.
i will also have a couple suggestions for next years 40's only run that i think might be considered. we only had 3 40's that went on this years run and it was a good one, besides the ho chi minh trail shortcut matt took us on lol. if your 40 needs worked on my shop is always open, you have almost a year to get it out of your garage and get it on the trail where it belongs, they aren't meant to go to the malls.
on a side note lol, jakes really nice 1st gen tundra that you have seen some pics of also had ds issues, he exploded the double cardan joint while playing on some big rocks. he missed the final lake we went to.

I dropped my front shaft a couple years ago while on a trail. Bolts had just worked loose. It's an easy thing to check and, while you're already there, it probably doesn't hurt to put some blue loctite on those threads. Thanks for the reminder!

i'm seriously thinking about red loctite, have been using blue forever yet still have issues. new flange and all new toyota bolts along with spare seals showed up today from cruiser outfitters. ordered monday. had a trip planned for caruthers on friday but still no driveshaft, ordered last week. enough vibration that i don't want to take a chance so no trip for me. if they haven't started on it friday i think i'll cancel it and try one from tom woods. it will be delivered in 2 days allegedly.

You could do the old farmer trick and booger the threads a bit before installing too. Red loctite seems like just asking for a bad time on a trail in the future.

A little red and some witness marks might be helpful Ron. So weird you’re loosing those bolts

definetly won't be using an excess of red. i've always been told that cross threading is better than loctite. gettin old and turning into a wus might have something to do with it

dont fear red locktite....particularly in easily accessible locations....a little heat and it comes apart when you need it to....and doesnt up till that point.

I'd be interested.

We're going to need a '89 and Older Only Run planning thread.

All for this!! End of September or October would be fun to do an overnight wheelin trip. I know ttFJC and I have been trying to plan a North Meadow Trip before the snow flies.

Last two weekends in October are free for me. Not much else though.
You guys wanna do something challenging and have a few rigs? or something more mellow and see how may rigs we can drag out of the garage?

I've got placeholders on both weekends in my calendar.
@90WT & @elkun1 1-10, what would you rate the difficulty of the Leadville trip? I'd guess that it would rate at least 1 point lower without snow and water running down the trails.

i would say that the ho chi minh trail that Matt took us on was the toughest part of that trip. i haven't checked but the last weekend of oct i would bet general season opens. also a good dumping of snow wouldn't surprise me by then. whitetail res is alway a close by option

maybe 5 out of 10. didn't seem too rough. :meh: Sorry about the ho chi minh trail. It looked better on the map, I swear.

Yeah, general season opens Oct 26. I was looking over the maps for something North of Canyon Ferry, maybe Avalanche Gulch or Confederate Gulch. I do like the idea of Whitetail Reservoir too.

if you haven't done whitetail it should definetly be considered. it has a variety of challenges none of which should cause any damage but are challenging. i've pulled my camp trailer all the way to the resevoir so that should eliminate any fears. we'll definetly want to make sure there's a couple of winches on the trip just in case. i made a bad, really bad choice and it took 2 winches doubled up to pull me thru the hole. there is a go around plus there needs to be some chainsaws present just in case. it's one that needs done

Since only solid front axle guys look at this thread and we don't need to inform the snobs that have those high falutin fancy smooth riding cars that should only be taken to the mall i'll let you in on something i just learned. maybe you already know this but i sure didn't, loctite has a shelf life of only 2 years from mfg!!! So that bottle that has sitting on the shelf at the parts store for a year or 2 the clock is ticking. after it's been opened it has 1 year, i have no idea on the loss of strength but would be a good phd study for some nerd that probably doesn't drive a solid axle toyota. it sounds like the gel has the same time frame and from what i could find the stick is maybe good for 4 years. it makes me wonder about that 4 ounce bottle of blue that i got when i was young if perhaps it contributed to my driveline fiasco. anyway with tears in my eyes i pitched the bottle that probably had another 10 years worth of blue but my blue stick just showed up and i aint taking anymore chances. Anyway, that's my PSA for the day and let's just keep this info amongst ourselves lol.

That might explain the screw that backed on out my holster mid-class this weekend. I was glad I had secondary retention because it's embarrassing to have your pistol fall out of your holster when you're the instructor.
