I've been looking and searching for just the right engine to start the build of my 73. Previous owner put in a SBC back in the day. An L83 5.3 plus tranny from a silverado has been presented to me. I know a lot of people go with 2004's thru 2006's. Is a 2017 too new??? I see some people ( maybe on non fi's ) have gone up to 2013. But what is newest 5.3 anyone has used without too much heartache, if any? Do the technology/performance benefits outweigh any issues i might be facing if i tried to go with this 2017?

Yes, i saw them,, they are much appreciated and helpful. The 5.3 pictured in Reddingcruisers build is from a 2002. I know in my previous thread, i had mentioned possibly using a 2015. This thread was just trying to find out how new guys have gone.

My initially question and concern was with " the size ". Based on the replies, I feel comfortable everything would fit. But someone suggested the Variable Timing and other computer related aspect might be a problem, because its more sophisticated / advanced than the 2002's -2006's etc,.

I don't mean to ask redundant questions or tie up the system, just trying not to get myself in a whole.

Basically, if you swap all the systems from the donor, with computer(s), it should work. I would spend some time on the LS1Tech forum and find someone who has done a swap with a 2016-17 engine.
Also, I think the complexity also comes from the donor vehicle. A stripped down Sierra vs a Yukon XL, for example.

According to wikipedia, the L83 is an EcoTec motor, E85 fuel capable. I would look into what challenges that fuel system creates for a swap.

Awesome. Thanks for the link. I saw a thread from their website but it wasn't this detailed. Looks very challenging. I'll have to sit down with my shop and see if we/they are up for the challenge or just make life easier, play it safe and go with older 5.3. This might be a case of Just because it CAN, doesn't mean it SHOULD be done.

Everyone has already figured out how to put an older one in, support is out there, programming, parts, measurements. Unless you want to be a guinea pig you will have a lot of headaches. I am currently getting ready to swap in a 2004 5.3.

Thanks all.. I knew if I heard the right answer enough times, I would finally get it... I will stick with the proven system and stay away from the complications with new outfit.. If I really want a veh with a new L83 I can just go by a new Silverado.
