2013 Land Cruiser Tune Up Recommendations (1 Viewer)

My 2013 Land Cruiser now has 120,000 miles - this includes a XC trip to Utah and 3 trips to Florida in less than a year!

The service manual states the spark plugs need to be changed at the 125K mile mark however what are signs to watch out for when spark plugs begin to go out? Any red flags to watch out for?

How often do you all replace your spark plugs as well?

Any best practices you can share would be great!

Strongly recommend you replace the plugs now.

RTH Enroute to LCDC and broke down

Have #8 misfire. I have spare plugs and a coil but I can’t loosen the hard tube bracket in back by #8. Stopped at a dealer but they only had oil change guys there and would do it. The did let me work on it but even with an impact I couldn’t get it loose. I’m going to hit it with penetrating...

There really won’t be a warning. One day a plug will just fail and you will get a misfire code. The other reason to do it at the recommended milage is because the condition of the plugs can be inspected when you pull them and it can tell you if you have other potential issues.

OEM plugs and get yourself another 125k miles of enjoyment.

One good reason to do them now is you can decide where: your place or an indy shop. That's not possible with a trip failure.

EDIT: the bit about this being the second #6 plug failure is wrong. It was #3 that failed before. see post 20. So Saturday night while rolling down the highway at 75 mph, the engine start running rough and I could feel a vibration. Scanned codes and got P0306 which is cylinder #6 misfire...

No real need to read. Just change your plugs.

Maintenance intervals have margins built in. It could, but not likely to experience symptoms right at the magic threshold. Testing helps establish these intervals, driven by severe use duty cycles. You're likely to get good performance well past that if you need to wait for some trips.

Symptoms to look for are misfires or what manifests as occasional stumbles. Usually happens at really heavy loads/throttle inputs, where the air/fuel mixture is dense. As we have 8 cylinders, it's not going to leave you stranded by any means. But should not run on that long term as there's raw air/fuel being fed into the exhaust where it'll burn up a cat in short order.

If you haven't done this already, I'd highly recommend changing the starter/starter relay. That's an issue that can leave you stranded. It's not on any maintenance cycle, but these have been well known to go out after ~100k. Without a hint of symptoms.

Which may be a good time to just take care of the plugs if you take it in to do the starter/relay. May want to have them inspect the radiator for the well known crack.
