How's the radiator? Check the front of the flat area for a hairline crack.

It looks ok. I will take a closer picture tomorrow. I looked up the service history and it was replaced at 118k July of 2017. Its now at 178k. Unfortunately they didn't put the new style in.

Got the pcv in and the coolant tees. If you have not yet replaced your tees, do so now or carry a few with you at all times. I barely touched one of them and one of the necks broke off. Getting the neck out of the hose, it was a crumbly mess. Also a pic of rad crack area. Hopefully it gets approval. Lol. Time to clean up the intake area on heads and set the intake in.

Those tees are in bad shape. Mine were in good shape but I replaced them anyway just because. PN is 87248-08030 (for another model but same size).

Radiator looks good, If it was already replaced you should be good for awhile, even if it is the old design. Just keep an eye on it.

I had planned on replacing them. Maybe next time I will go with some metal ones when I replace the hoses. Almost finished. I guess I broke the throttle body connector when taking everything apart. I assume we can buy replacement connectors? A ziptie will work for now.

Well it is up and running. Took exactly 3 gallons. After driving around this weekend I will recheck the coolant.

Continuing the baseline. I will just keep this 1 thread going to not spam the forum. Next up is the AHC fluid. Vacuum out a little over a quart from the reservoir. Looks pretty dark.

Is it possible to investigate this area of the engine with a small borescope to see if this problem exists on a vehicle without removing the intake?

I don't know on the 5.7L but on the 1UR-FE (4.6L) a borescope in this location can identify it sometimes.

Yes, but whether or not you’ll need to tear out some of the foam insulation depends on the angles and depth you want to get the scope in.

What is the customer pay price for this repair? I got an estimate at $2k (I think 12 hours of tech labor). Seems high to me.

Mine is at the local shop now.
I will let you know the final price when it’s done.
My rig also leaking oil in the valley as well.
Interesting about the oil. Valve cover maybe? Yes please let me know final price. I don’t have time really to do it, but $2,000…. I can make pretty good money per hour if I do it!

@TXLX100 I just had my coolant valley plate resealed. I have a good relationship with my Indy mechanic who did it for 8 hours and I provided all the parts (gaskets, sealant...etc). Sounds like this repair is best left to a shop that is familiar with how tedious this job is.
I was quoted as high as $2900 at a lexus dealership. Basically told me there is no book rate for the repair and after some back and forth they said they could go down from 12 hours to 10....still costing well over 2 grand yikes.

The toyota dealership gave me a vague quote between 7-10 hours.

Id shop around a couple Indy shops and dealerships to see if you can get a better quote. Between $1300-$2000 is what i'd expect to pay.

Do tundras have the same issue?

There is a book rate for the repair, they just don’t want to tell you because it’s probably 6 hours. Warranty pay is sometimes half of what a lot of Lexus dealers charge the customer. (E.g. warranty time 5 hours x 1.5 or 2 = customer pay time)

Good to know, curious if anyone can confirm the book rate. Sounds like most are paying between 8-12 hours for this repair.

I’m working on it right now. Will update. It seems like a tedious day job. But I wouldn’t be surprised if a fast tech does it in 4-5 hours. So 8-10 hours is probably fair.

I got some information today.

Independent shop $1600 labor (12 hours I’m guessing), $2000 with parts

Toyota dealer $800-ish all included (6 hours I’m guessing)

A technician friend - about 8 hours.

It sounds like there is not a straight book time for this repair. The intake is 4-5 hours I assume, plus whatever the shop wants to estimate on top of that for cleaning and reseal of the valley plate.

So $800 to $2000 at a shop. It’s probably wise to call around or ask shop to justify the labor time involved if it’s on the high end.
