Good thread on rebuilding parts req'd for the starter and very helpful to see people finding exact PN and cross-referencing 4Runner + 100 series + Tundra. My guess is that people might rebuild a starter as a personal challenge or purist for OEM components. The real dollar costs (even using 2024 devalued USD) makes buying aftermarket cheaper than 20 years ago. (On my Tacoma, the alternator went out at around 125k after sinking into a mud pit. Found DB Electrical and you can call them directly. Per another thread, the GX 470 has a component that is known to affect the output of non OEM alternators. See:
My Taco has 212k with no issues on the DB alternator. If you need high output, they can walk you through their products options. Repeated an alternator replacement with my 98 4R at 200k and this one now has 285k with no issues. Just ordered a starter and based on my experience, I'm confident in the purchase. As often as possible, OEM or OEM supply chain brands are definitely preferred especially for the drive train, suspension, and so on. But, sometimes reality steps in and DB can be an option. Because they're in TN, you're dealing with CONUS contact over the phone so call them to verify while you're on the website and they'll confirm or guide you to the exact item you need you finalize the order.
