So driving home on the highway at about 65 mph and all of a sudden it started to decelerate and the rpms went up, as if the transmission was in neutral. Coasted to the shoulder immediately and put it in park. VSC lights and CEL were illuminated. Grabbed my scanner and got codes P0986, P0974, P2716.

When I go from P to D, nothing noticeable, and the truck starts rolling forward. When I give it throttle it accelerates, feels like the transmission slips clunks into second, and goes. The truck then accelerates fine through 2-3-4 (while in D) and then when it wants 5 it does the neutral and rev up thing. If I move the shifter to 4, it will drive fine in that gear. I was able to limp it home.

Im havent found many threads at all on this issue but it seems like it could be bad fluid(151k miles unknown changes), bad shift solenoids, bad connector/cable.

Any thoughts or input of where I should start to tackle this?

LS swap.

No, start with the basics

Any recent trans work, flush & fill etc? Usually these AISIN Warner transmissions will give some warning signs of impending failure, did you notice anything out of ordinary past few weeks?

If you can get it to your driveway- check the fluid level. The detailed procedure is in FSM. If its done- .....perfect time to upgrade to one of these

No recent transwork, I've had the truck for almost two years and done maybe 2500 miles on it. Never anything out of the ordinary, but granted I dont drive any longer than a 40 mile all highway trip, or a couple miles to the store.

Trying to do a budget fix on it and replace solenoids or wiring harness if thats the issue as there isnt really any wheeling where I am and I dont tow.

Thanks for linking that, I have a multimeter and am capable with electronics. I was planning on dropping the pan and testing the individual solenoids for the "click" sound

Mileage is 151k and 2500 miles in last two years ??

Yes, I'm given a car for work, and have two motorcycles. I sometimes go 2-3 weeks without even driving it. I might do 100 miles per month on it.

Some of us prefer safer, more efficient, more stylish, faster vehicles for daily driving

Before dropping the pan- I would do a fluid level check as a baseline (if you can get the trans up to temp). Check temp is 97 to 115F- with engine running it should dribble out of the overflow plug.

Well looks like you may have gotten one of three right being ready LC isn’t fast.

But not driving one of the best machines made is not efficient and can create problems. Over and over Mud threads show up with low mileage rigs having issues, some major, that often seem mighty premature. But that should be no surprise with most any machine that sits around, oxidizing and drying up.

Well I drained and took off the pan. I had a feeling the internal wiring harness might have been bad. I ordered a new one ( 82125-35130 ) and installed it today. Not a terrible job but gets a little messy. Code P2716 is gone, but still getting P0984 and P0974.

Truck is still doing the hard 1-2 shift, and no 5th gear at all.

Going to pop the harness off again and blow off the female side incase the connection is bad.

Is the rig parked indoors in a secured area? Critters can get up in all sorts of places and make nice little homes when vehicles aren't used for days at a time, especially when parked outdoors.

A friend of mine had his knock sensor wiring chewed up by a rodent who make a temporary home in the V of his V8 Sequoia.

Just an update since no one really seems to have this issue on the 100 series.

Ive been researching for hours, on every toyota equipped with the A750E or A750F tranny.

I have done several drains of the ATF fluid. It is very clean now. After I clear the codes, I start the truck and no lights come on, I can shift through PRND432L with no lights. When I put it into D, it will roll forward fine. With my foot on the break, if I press the 2nd Start button, It will clunk and the truck will feel like I got rear-ended slowly.

Most recently I pulled out the SR solenoid, marked at number 7 in the above, and tested it on 12v, it clicked as a solenoid should and holds air/lets it pass when its energized.

The only other thing I can think to test now is continuity of the harness starting at the ECM, but im not really sure how to do that.

It seems more likely you have a failure internal to the transmission mechanicals

What makes you say that? Aside from kinda jamming into second, and not having 5th, and giving the codes for failed solenoid, or bad wiring, it seems to be working fine.

Although, I'm not expert, this is my first time going into a transmission. Im reluctant to bring it anywhere just to be told "you need a new transmission".

This problem has been way more prevalent on 4runners, tacos, tundras, and hell even siennas

I agree, I still think it's an electrical-related issue. The problem is more prevalent on those other vehicles you listed because there were a hell of a lot more of those sold in the U.S. than Cruisers (like millions more). The below list of all Toyotas that have the same A750F as you may help in your quest to fix the issue. Might be worth posting on the 4Runner/Taco/Tundra forums in particular.

Also check all your grounds. My parents had a sudden and severe onslaught of similar-ish transmission issues that ended up being ground point EC had come lose. That one is located on the back of the engine block on the passenger side. Gotta reach down in the gap between block and firewall to find it.

Another tell of a bad EC ground is the trans will improve if you plug a scan tool into the OBD port. Assuming the OBD port ground is good.

My transmission gernaded at 115k miles; all prior service schedules were met at Lexus dealer service centers.

My truck would start fine, but the second you put it in gear, it would die.

good luck.
