Hi, I am 15 and I believe my first car will be a 2001 tundra that I will purchase off my dad . But I would like to install a limited slip because I would like to do some off roading. So my question is what is the best option for this truck? And also will a limited slip be able to be turned off? I have heard that on rain and snow if you give it to much gas the back end will come out. Should this be a concern? Thank you

I'm not sure I've ever seen an after market limited slip. You may have to get an air locker, which can be turned off in the cab.

Good to know. How much do you think a rear locker would run? And can you put a locker on the front end if its a independent front and not a solid axle? Thanks and sorry if that's a dumb question.

Resesrch e lockers and air lockers.not sure about costs, probably 500-600 bucks new. Does the Tundra have a center diff lock? That may be all you need.

On cruisers, sequoias and 4 runners, they have a center differential, (instead of a transfer case) which could be locked when needed. Apparently the Tundras didn't have this feature. (Someone correct me if I am wrong). That being said, I suppose you might be able to drop a later model locker in your truck. Check out tundranation.com as well, there is a little more info on tundras there. Fwiw, you can go a lot of places without a locker. Might be cheaper to by a good winch, lol

Hi all,

I'd advise that if you are looking to try some off-roading to find a local club to run with; these more experienced guys can "teach you the ropes."

A stock 4wd with good tires and a skilled driver can go a lot of places. As you learn more about off-roading and your truck you will gain a better idea of how to "build it" for tougher trails.

That said, if you decide to go with a limited slip diff for the rear axle, the Detroit Tru Trac is the superior choice. The Tru Trac will install in the standard differential case (unlike most limited slips) and features gears not clutch packs.

Regards,

Alan
