After spending hours trying to find the answer and frying an alternator, I figured I'd make my first post after many years on this forum and ask...
2001 Toyota Land Cruiser
I replaced the alternator. The positive lead is on the side secured by a bolt. The plug is in the rear of the alternator. The plug broke.
I rewired the plug according to a diagram I found on another thread and... well... I fried that alternator. So I'm on round 2 now.
There are 3 wires that come from the truck and are supposed to feed into that plug:
1. Black and Orange
2. Orange and Blue
3. White and Blue
I had them so they fed into the alternator(through the plug) in the aforementioned order from left to right if I am looking at the rear of the alternator.
If I turn the ignition to accessories and put a multimeter on each wire, I get the following readings:
1. Black and Orange- 11.6
2. Orange/(Red?) and Blue- 11.6
3. White and Blue- 11
I also ran a test on the alternator hooked up to the battery only. Positive to the positive lead on the side, negative wired to one of the bolt holes in the alternator as a ground. I then ran the multimeter across each of the leads that the plug is supposed to insert onto(alternator is male end).
From left to right, the readings were:
Left lead - 11.8
Middle Lead- 10.8
Right lead- 0
Does anyone have any advice on wiring this thing?
I've read the 0 lead on the alternator is supposed to be the (L) wire- which I have routed to the black and orange wire but have also seen some people state that L should be the lead with the lower reading....
Happy to hear any advice.
