ok so i have found out the the previous owner for some reason took out the entire relay assembly for the ac condenser fan and fuse. Hence why mine is not working. Tried to find one online and everything i find does not look like it will fit the plug, my car is a 2001 LX470 and it seems to look like a different connector than the relays i can find for the 99-2000. They are all 4 pin relays and plugs with 4pin, my plug has 5 pin, one is a ground, i was going to wire in my own relay since i couldnt find the exact part that looks to fit my plug but the wiring diagram (from my lexus wiring FSM) shows that the relay is a 4 terminal.

I did trace all the wires i could

obviously the thick wires are the ones to supply fan with power, the 2 thin ones (not ground) 1 of them goes the the 3 stage pressure switch and the other one (according to the manual) goes the the Mag Clutch relay. and the black and white one is ground.

i got 14v from one of the thin wires to ground while engine was on but it would not go off it continued to supply 14v even when high pressure line was below 220psi.

any ideas (best scenario would be finding this 5pin relay)

Any update?

I have a similar situation on my 2001. My condenser fan is not working. I tested it by connecting it directly to the battery and the motor is strong. I removed the bumper cover to find my relay is missing.

I spent a few minutes testing the wires, but I couldn't find any hot wires in the plug with the AC on "max cold". Next step is to trace all the wires to make sure nothing funny was done to bypass the relay.

Why could someone remove the relay and not replace it?

yeah same, not sure why someone would take it, but i still havent found the solution haha, i went to lexus, they gave me a part that doesnt fit :/ so not sure what ima do, for now, no ac fan - just did an engine swap though :) ill post some pics in a minute

Zomby Thread for my Zomby Apocalypse Vehicle.

My 98 LX470. AC condenser fan never came on. Ever. AC would stop working when it was hot out and idling alot, like going through the drive through line at taco hell and micky-d.

I tracked it down to the fan relay. Man, Toyota really screwed that one up. The relay is located between the front bumper and the left front wheel. The Toyota Part Number is 886300-60090. It is a Denso part, Denso part number 156700-0490. My google-fu says that it was only used on Land Cruisers and some kind of Subaru. Ebay had one available, for $40, USED, and from Russia, nothing on rock auto or Oreiley's. Now, this relay is in the worst possible position possible for any electronics component. In front of the left front wheel, fully exposed to water every time you go through a puddle. Mine wasn't working. I pulled the cover off and it was basically rusted solid inside. Rather than find the Toyota part or a used $40 one from Russia, I cut everything out of the relay and used it as a plug into the harness by soldering pigtails on the terminals left inside, pigtails going to a relay socket for a generic automotive relay, of which I had a few laying around. They are sold for everything from light bars to radiator fans, rated at 30 amps. I then wrapped everything up well with black tape and zip tied it behind the headlight. Fan will now come on with high pressure. You can confirm this by shorting the control line at the AC triple pressure switch to ground while the compressor is running. The fan will kick on.

I noticed a 2001 LX that I once had also did not have the fan relay right behind front bumper like it was in my ‘99 and 2000 Hundys. If i remember correctly and read the diagram correctly, the relay in the 2001 is located up higher in the fender well I think above the DS tire. I may be wrong but that is what I am remembering.

It would not surprise me at all that Toyota moved that relay. They do very well at fixing problems that show up in their products, unlike many other manufacturers. 98 still had it behind the bumper cover. The shop manual says to remove the lower bumper cover then work on the relay. I really didn't want to do that. I managed to reach up in through the wheel well and disconnect the plug to the relay, then pull the relay off the bracket. It just slides off the end of the bracket. I think it would be easier to pull it off the bracket first, then fight the connector. I have 231K miles on the ZAV.

The triple pressure switch is located at the bottom of the sight glass, left (patient's left), lower, front of the radiator area. I back probed the line from the relay that gets grounded to turn the fan on using a paperclip. It is a black wire with a red tracer. That line is only powered up when the compressor is running. Shorting it to ground with the compressor on should kick in the fan if the relay is working. If it doesn't, back up to the relay. Pull the plug off and short the two large connectors inside the plug together, that is, connect one to the other with a small clip lead, not the 2 small connectors, as shorting them would be A Bad Thing. The 2 large ones. Draw is 7 amps, so don't use a tiny wire to test with. The fan should come on anytime, engine running or not, if those 2 are shorted together. That will test the fan and the wiring from the fuse to the fan. If the fan comes on when shorted at the relay plug and doesn't when the control line (black-red) is grounded, the problem is probably the relay. Chance of the wire between the 2 being bad is pretty small compared to the relay. Pull the relay out and put 12V across the 2 small pins. You should hear it click. No clicky - no worky. If it clicks, check the resistance between the 2 big pins. Should be very low when 12V is across the 2 small pins and open when not.

I'm working through my AC system right now. I found 8884060070 is shown as an alternate part number for the relay, and appears to be widely available.

Thanks. My Aggie Rigged relay seems to be holding up OK. I haven't had any more problems with it, but the weather has cooled off some.

Where is the fan relay located? my 2001 has the fan but never see it come on.

EDIT: found it, its in the driver, Left, fender behind the turn signal.
So if im not seeing any fan action on a hot day, refridgerant low? Power to fan directly works.

My relay was fried.

Does anyone know what that connector is pictured at the start of this thread? It's not for the condenser fan relay, as it only has 4 wires, or at least on a 2000 LX470. Blue, Blue-Red, Black-Yellow, Black Red. I was having the same issue, and this thread definitely helped. Found the relay and tested it according to the service manual and it was bad. I found this service bulletin:

Some 1998-2000 model year LX 470 vehicles may have a condition in which the A/C condenser fan continues to run after the ignition is turned off due to corrosion in the relay connector. A repair kit (P/N 88840-60070) consisting of a new relay and sealant has been made available to correct this concern.

I do however have the same plug pictured above with nothing attached, and it looks to be in bad shape. Wondered if anyone had an idea what its used for. It's located behind the bumper on the drivers side along with the condenser fan relay connector and the signal/fog light connectors. It has six wires like the connector pictured above. Thanks!

UPDATE: That plug pictured is for the Headlight Cleaner Control Relay, which my LX does not have.

I have owned my 1999 LX for 6 years and I thought I had no issues with my AC but I had always wondered if it could be a little stronger, especially in the 90 degree heat and humidity in the midwest. When I changed the front bumper out ( Ironman 4x4), i discovered that this relay is missing (Denso 156700-2260), and I dont even know if my AC condenser fan works at all. Anyhow....the connector piece that inserts into the relay had become very brittle and was badly deteriorated, so I cut the wires and covered them with electrical tape. I plan to lengthen the wires and place the relay under the hood somewhere. My question is......can I find a replacement connector insert from toyota or elsewhere? If not, then I will find a way to make it work
