2000 LC transmission failure

The transmission in my 2000 LC with 91K is toast as of last night. It will not move at all under it's own power. The transmission had been making strange sounds, right after it shifted gears in the 1100-1800 RPM range. This went on for two days before this happened. When it happened last night, once it was not moving, when I shifted it into drive it sounded like there were large chunks of metal rattling around.
 
That's very odd for such a tank of a vehicle. Even if it was used hard for 91k it shouldn't shell a trans. What have it's 91k been like? Towing heavy? Offroading? Previous owner drove it on pavement with the diff locked? (just kiddin about that last one, SwampY:D)

Mine just had it's trans out for a new torque converter, but it turned out not to be the problem, the trans was fine. These transmissions are way overkill for most of us.
 
The '00 LC/LX transmission is failure prone due to some defective part(s). Search the archives. There are a number of them, and virtually all were '00's.
 
Yeah, I read up on all the other cases posted on here regarding transmission failures. I bought it last year with about 68K on it and it was super clean, garage kept, etc. I've only had it offroad a handful of times so it's had a pretty easy life (at least in my hands). I still haven't heard anything from the shop so I'm hoping it's just the torque converter and nothing more. We'll see how it plays out......
 
It seems there was a batch of transmissions with bad shims - most of them fail between 60k and 100k. Mine failed around 70k and I had a Toyota remanafactured unit installed. It has been fine since then. I was very reluctant to invest that much in a tranny for an old truck but I would do it again. The transmission cost what a good used car is worth.

Mine failed under warranty for the PO at 52K miles, hopefully they installed one that does not have the same problem. Is there a way to tell?
 
My 2001's bit it last Summer due to a failed bearing. So the stealership said . Think I was at about 62,000 miles. Luckily, I had about a MONTH left on my extended warranty...WHEW !!
Very surprised the tranny would fail at such low mileage. I know I take very good care of it but no telling how the previous owner treated it. :bang:

Well, come to find out it was the torque converter. The shop is trying to sell me on letting them rebuild my tranny for $2,700 for a basic rebuild, $3,600 for a "premium" rebuild or they will put in a certified Toyota remanufactured transmission for $4,000 out the door. I told them to go ahead and get the remanufactured unit from Toyota. I'm assuming any updates or issues should be made on the remanufactured unit so I don't have to go through this again. Can anyone confirm this?
 
Might be a bit late ...

The Toyota Reman is going to have all the updates. If you are paying out of your own pocket then I might price a Wholesale Automatics rebuild from Slee. They are the transmission gurus.
 
are the 100 series landcruisers known to have tranny failures in general???
 
My has 75K miles on it I'm thinking to drain the trany oil and change it with Royal Purple syntetic. Do you gys think this is a good idea?

No, Only the group built with bad internal parts. 2000 model years mostly. I don't remember any on the board going bad that weren't in that group.
