I am looking into replacing my replacement engine in a mostly (new to me) 2014 LC. Three months ago I was fooled by a certain used car dealership in Cobb county, Ga. I was way too trusting and not verifying (shame on me).
Regardless, and a bit hesitant to start this thread, but I have found nothing definitive regarding:

1) Will a Tundra 5.7 engine "plug n play"?
2) Will a LX 570 engine "plug n play"?
3) Will different model year engines of the 200 series "plug n play"?

Also, sources for a used engine (be it LC, LX, or Tundra)? I have seen on this site that car-parts.com, LKQ, etc. is recommended.

I am linking the following threads so these guys (who I think are in the same boat) get the benefit of any additional info as well:

I hope this doesn't "MUD"dy the water. ;) Thank you for your support.......

I have not done one, but I would think the ECM dash unit NAV unit and FDU all need to talk to each other.
Some cars you need to program the coils.

What's wrong with your replacement engine that it needs to be replaced again?
Lately (yesterday) it is kicking out a P0022 code. Drove it 20 miles to get home and it died with engine no-start about 2 miles from house. I am hacked off at the dealer that I bought it from. But more hacked at myself.....
This is my 2nd stranding no start in 90 days.....

Clarifying: The previous owner (used car dealer) swapped the engine in and I did not discover it because the carfax was stellar......Until it wasn't.

These links further describe my woes:

That should glue it all together. But it is not combat and it is not cancer. I'm a blessed dude....

That’s a hell of a perspective you have. Right on.

With that said, is there any sort of legal option you have for damages for this engine issue? I’m assuming the dealer you bought from knowingly passed off a polished turd. You’ve done what you can in good faith in trying to fix it from what I can see.

unfortunately used car sales are final in state of ga.

Have you had the issues diagnosed?

Also, have you figured out which shop will do the engine swap. I think you need to have them involved with the engine search. Warranty will be very important. Also if the chosen shop will do a tundra to lc swap.

Also jarco, inc does engine rebuilds with oem parts. They typically sell to dealerships but they might be sell to your chosen shop.

From what I've seen on this forum the replacement engine is always sourced out of an LC/LX from a compatible model year.

Tundra swaps are supposedly possible. However I've yet to come across a report of a professional mechanic installing a motor sourced from a Tundra for a paying customer.

Regardless, you definitely want to be sure a new engine is actually required. (Second opinions, etc)

Thanks gasman and 32.
I talked to a local attorney awhile back and, like 32 says it is buyer beware in Ga, as it should be IMO. My issue with the seller (dealer) is that they closed down all correspondence. They would not give me any info re: the salvage engine. I just wanted the history, as most LC owners would.

I have a really, really knowledgeable indy mechanic here locally in western NC and we are discussing options....
Thanks for y'all's interest. Hopefully this adds to a database here of some kind.........

sorry to hear of your troubles..

hope you get it sorted

I’m sorry you’re going through this. Keep doing what you can and post when you are able. Godspeed.

I went through this recently. Salvage yards (that are reputable) will only sell you a donor that is compatible with your vin. So basically it has to be a LC/LX donor from your range model year. In your case a 2013-2015 LC/LX donor for your 2014. I went through this last year. Tundra swaps are not documented. Even Land Cruiser shops I worked with weren’t willing to drop a tundra or sequoia engine into my LC. Best of luck man.

Yes, when I was doing my research, a used LC/LX 3UR was typically more than than a used Tundra/Sequoia 3UR.

Always get the vin number of the donor. This way you know what it came out of.

PS…I hope you never find yourself in this situation! But it could be your excuse to “upgrade” into the “new” Land Cruiser 250. But I digress…

Thank you kindly for the info.

I guess dealers are so slimy I was assuming so are parts resellers

LIke basically how would I verify they don't give me a Tundra motor when I need the LC?

Since the 5.7L will blow up eventually, I need to prepare.

I would walk daily, holding Oprah's hand, than ever be in a 250.

My first donor motor was from an LX (allegedly) and the upper oil pan was different and missing the oil level sensor bung. Tundras are the same way. Several used motors I found were listed to fit Tundra/Sequoia/LX and not LC. Was frustrating to not find clear answers but a lot of "I heard of a guy that" speculation.

Have you pulled your valve covers to inspect springs? Trollholes in Greenville SC also recently diagnosed 2 200s that were on the death bed by other shops and got them back on the road.
