200 over a 100?

Lets take price out of the equation to start with. There, now that that's out of the way......

Looking really hard at a Land Cruiser for our next family/camping/hunting/fishing rig and my lady and I are having a hard time picking one. I've run the gamut of LC's in my research and so far we've narrowed it down to either a 100 or 200. Both fit into our budget and money for mods isn't going to be an issue. I guess the question is why did you get a 200 instead of a 100. Is the 5.7l that much better of a power plant? Does the crawl assist really do what it advertises? Etc??

The end result of either on is going to be cargo area storage, front and rear bumpers, sliders, a roof top tent, probably a winch and a few other things that we'll need for week long runs out to remote fishing areas. Might need some advice on adding a dual battery set up and some type of shower but I'll do the leg work on those mods after I get the rig in the driveway.

Thank you folks.

If modding it with everything you are talking about, I get the impression that there are more options with the 100. The money you save on the vehicle can go into making the rig something truly special. I also think that it is easier to build a 100 to fit 35" tires and up vs. the 200. There is a ton of info out there to help support your build.

With that in mind...

5.7L. It is a great power plant. I wouldn't go without the torque and horses it puts out. Nice motor, and you may want it once you load the thing up. Crawl control is nice, but super gimmicky. You may never use it it's so gimmicky, but it does work, and has uses for some. Consider the age of the vehicle too 200 vs. 100. You will get a much younger rig in the 200, potentially allowing for more and longer usage.

I'm not sure if you posted this I the 100 section, but you may want their feedback. I recently picked up a 200 (again), and after briefly thinking about making it a 100, quickly realized that I wouldn't have been happy.

You'll be able to do all the mods you'd like on a 200. Check out the nice Slee 200 build, there just won't be quite as many choices as far as sliders/bumpers, etc. It has the dual battery and a shower setup.
Slee - Project Trucks

The 200 will have more leg room and room for gear, as long as you un-bolt out the 3rd row seats. The 200 is going to have more safety features for the family. The 100 is an amazingly safe vehicle, but much of it's design was done in the mid 90's. The 100 is comfortable and the 200 even more so.

The 200 is big overall and you may get some pinstriping scratches in narrow trails.

I have a 100, if I had the finances I would have a 200 instead.

Thanks for the replies folks. I have been posting in and lurking in the 100 section while we were still trying to decide on which vehicle to get.

I really like the added safety of the 200 and the larger available v8 since we'll be carrying a lot of gear when we go out and about.

That is exactly what my lady and I have been talking about. Hmmm... Now I wonder if it'd be easier to just drop the rig off at Slee like that person did and have the work done by the pros.

as argued in the 100 thread with the 80 v100 many times. It is obvious that the 100 is always better. I do not own either so i am impartial.

that was a lie. . .

the 100 is 8 million times better. you know that.

You can't take price out of the equation. If you can afford a 200 and can afford to drop it off at Slee then go for it. Its a gorgeous rig that is the next step in an incredible evolution. If you really want a rig to wheel then get an 80 series and rebuild it top to bottom. I own a 100 and love it but it doesn't have as much power as I would like, it doesn't have a 5 speed, and no lockers but I can add em.

i have a soft spot for 100's but if you can afford a 200 then go for the 200 .

The 200 is an incredible vehicle and is probably better than the 100 in every single way, after all toyota spent 5 years developing it !

Here's my opinion. You will be happy with either. I currently have both an 04- 100 and the 08-200. I considered getting another 100, but after learning more about the 200 and finding one I thought I got a good deal on- I went that way. I can tell you that stock or aftermarket, the features in the 200 will be superior. The hill decent and crawl mode works as advertized. See YouTube videos. The biggest feature is the KDSS. It disconnects the sway bars and allows amazing travel on the wheels. The wheels can almost disapear in the wheel well or drop down so low it does not seem possible. Then take it out of 4x4 lo and drive 90 on the highway around curves at 70 with total control.

The 6th gear makes for a smooth ride. It really feels like you can beat a big truck getting onto highway, where there can be some pucker on the 100. There is an inertia system that does not allow roll back when on any incline- whether or not in 4x4 lo. Weird feeling when you are on a incline and expect to feel some drift back and nothing happends. If you get the premium package it has a great sound system, and "water" cool box (does great to keep beer cold from store to home or water on the road). Check the 200 offroad video thread for some ideas. Let us know what you go with and join the insanity.

Have you thought about getting both? It's pretty nice to go into your garage and see nothing but cruisers....

X2- Thanks to your suggestions..ha! It looks great when you open the door- makes me smile.

i would not buy either. the 300 is your next buy. super awesome

Not to put too fine a point on it but that's what we're planning. Buy one that we like and ship it to Colorado for upgrades.

Still doing a poop pile of research, looking at Range Rovers also, and trying to decide on what we want and what I want it to be able to do.

Awesome response and thanks. Lots of great features in these vehicles. My lady and I have decided that no matter what we get it has to be fully loaded, leather, sun roof and as capable as the lifted and double locked 89 4runner that we use for camping and weekend get-aways. I have to admit that I am a little curious about driving something with 381hp since my little runner has less than a third of that even with all the mods I've done. *laugh*

Just stepped outside to take my garbage out, and there she was!

Get a 200.

In the past few years I have owned a 1997 LC, 2001 LC, 2007 LX and now a 2008 LX. If you plan to add lots of upgrades and spend lots of time off-road I would stick with a 100 series. Truth be told, there aren't many things that I like better about my LX200 vs the LX100 but there are plenty of things that I miss about my LX100 :( YMMV.

Such as? This is the kind of information I need. Not something out of a brochure or from a salesman but honest "this is better than/worse than that" from someone who has driven both.

There really aren't too many negatives of the 200 series over the 100 series.

1- The 200 3rd row seat is bolted into the floor, it does not pop out like the 100. This means less cargo storage.
Solution - Many owners have unbolted one or both 3rd row seats for more room.
Why Toyota did this - The 3rd row seating has become much safer in the 200 series. Perhaps the bolted seats are a more secure attachment in the event of an accident?

2- The 200 is a fair amount bigger, it can have difficulty on narrow off road trails.
Solution - You'll bulldoze wider trails, but may leave stripes on your paint job.

3- The 200 is 1 inch lower with ground clearance than the 100.
Solution - Get 33" tires, or get an LX with AHC (if you don't heavily modify vehicle)
Why Toyota did this - Safety, lower ground clearance = less rollover risk

4- More worry about scratches/dings in a newer more expensive 200 series.

5- Some prefer the look of the 100 over the 200, even though their favorite look is still the 80,60 or 40.

One more negative: far more likely to get a speeding ticket!

Here are a few observations...

-The LX100 had a smoother ride. Not hard to believe with 18" vs 20" tires. FWIW, I had two different sets of high-end tires on both rigs so I know this wasn't caused by a bad set of tires.

-The LX100 had more comfortable front seats -for me- @ 6'2" 200lbs.

-The LX100 was more compact and easier to manouver around town.

-The LX100 had a much nicer view out the front due to the more upright glass and narrower A-pillars.

-The 4.7L is smoother than the 5.7L....again no big surprise.

-I really miss the VGRS steering from the LX100.

I have no plans to sell my LX200 and go back to a 100 but the ol' rig is nothing to sneeze at!
