We were experiencing significant brake squeal on our 2017 LandCrusier. I was a little surprised to find the pads only half worn then really surprised to find this ring loose behind the outer pad on the passenger side. I assume this is designed to ride inside the dust jacket/boot on the piston? I didn’t want it loose in there so removed it and the caliper seems to be working fine - is there anything to watch for on the caliper that is came out of?

How big is that ring? Could be the retainer for the hub cap.

It’s about 2” in diameter. I’m very confident it’s supposed to be inside the dust jacket of the caliper piston. It looks like it broke and then was able to work itself free. It made itself known taking the pad off the caliper after compressing the piston.

This looks like the retainer ring that holds the cylinder boot in place (43731A). I rebuilt my calipers a couple of years ago and that certainly looks like it.
