20 minute tranny install

Sorry no pics, but thought I'd pass this along. I put my 4 speed back in tonite to get my truck back on the road (waiting for 5 speed stuff is taking too long). After enduring the headache of getting it out (I replaced the rear main, clutch, and front tranny seal) lowering it with a jack, I did a search of ways to get it in easier...

I put a bar across my roll cage above the shifter access panel, slide the tranny under with two straps around it, attached them to a come-along hanging from the bar...my friend cranked it up, I guided it in place, got all the bolts in, and the cross member under in les than 20 minutes...worked really slick....

I have a transmission jack, but keeping the tranny/transfer case from twisting on it is a bitch. Maybe using it plus the come along off the cage would work better.

I am getting ready to replace the clutch, so I will try it.

My buddy does the same thing but uses the front doors for the support since he doesn't have his cage in yet.

me and my pops used a thousand year old tranny jack that hardly worked.. and couldn't jack it up high enough because muffler pipe was in the way.. what a PIA.. never seen my dad get so frustrated..

i'll try this method next time (hopefully not for a while..).. thanx for sharing.

Engine hoist through the door works about the same, with tranny hump off of course.

Last time I pulled my tranny, I pulled just the shifters and used a tranny jack. I don't know which is more time consuming pulling the seats, heater and tranny cover. Or getting the shifters off. It is a pain getting the transfer linkage removed and installed under the rig. Definetly less room to work.

I did the same thing but I did not remove the transfer shifter. I was able to get it under the truck without doing that.

i've used the come-along technique many times. for gene's "project phoenux" we used the cherry picker thru the open door and were able to install the trans in less than 15 minutes including the drive shafts.

i usually use a transmission jack but having the trans hanging from a single stray allows you much more movement and can make linig things up a lot easier.

saw horse of course

I had a couple tall saw horses for resting my tub on so I stuck one in the tub and hung the tranny on it from a couple of ratchet straps

I had purchased a tranny jack and left it in the box until I went to use it and found it wouldnt fit on my jack!

otherwise I could of mated the tranny when the engine was hanging on the hoist
