2 into 1 exhaust: Diameter and muffler choice?

So far I've got 2 inch rams horns into a 2 inch Y-pipe. I'm thinking 2.5 inch from there out.

I've always liked the cheapo stainless turbo mufflers. If you want more sound, you can't beat a cherry bomb for price/performance.

No cherry bombs or glass packs. I want a note, but a civilzed one

What size engine? With 2" ram horns I am guessing smaller than a 350? I have a 305 and went with a custom made 2 1/4" Y pipe and then 2 1/2" the rest of the way through a Magnaflow muffler. I would have preferred a 2" Y and 2 1/4" the rest of the way, but I was planning on a larger engine at some point.

I used the wagner Y pipe too. When you install it you'll find it does not exit straight back, it points slightly to the left frame rail in front of the oil filter. You have to have a piece slightly curved so it goes around the oil filter, I had them flange it to 2 1/4" there. The outlet of the Y pipe is just under 2". From there It runs 2 1/4 straight back to a knockoff 40 w/a 2 1/2" outlet for the tail pipe. I have a approx 1" body lift , so the exhaust runs parallel w/the top of the frame rail. It will never interfere w/any trans removal or rocks. The exhaust sounds great. Quite while putting, & good note when getting on it. I found a shop do it for $160 & I had the y pipe installed already.

Oops forgot that part. It's a 383 (stroked 350) and it's performed quite well for nearly 20 years with a pair of 2 " all the way out on a short trip to the sides. I'm now changing to 2 into 1 to eliminate the noise and vulnerability of side dumps in front of the tire.
The engine is purpose built for low end, low RPM duty. It is no high speed monster and restriction of stock exhaust adds to the equation. I just don't want to add too much.
If I remember correctly, the trucks that used this manifold and y-pipe set up we're running 2" all the way out the back.

I used 2and1/4" and a flowmaster 40, sounds great to me (290HP 350).

Because 1 pipe and muffler is cheaper and easier than 2.

Your set up looks great! I'm wondering if you got any tread marks on that chrome tip yet?

For what you're doing I'd go with 2 1/2" all the way out with a Magnaflow of some sort. As someone pointed out stock for a Chevy V8 (even 454) no more than that most of the time.

My 350 breaths fine with a 2-into-1 and 2 1/2 through a dynomax 6" dia muffler. For inexpensive mufflers that sound good, farm stores have tough tractor mufflers that flow and have good sound. I put one for an International on my wife's 80. Call me rednecked, but it works and sounds good aside from the rusted out rear exhaust and blown 2nd muffler. I still get "honey do" complaints. I think it was about $25 and is built pretty heavy.

I specifically have a no-brand in mind. Magnaflow costs extra just for the name. I'd get the cheapest they have a Kragens or Summit. It's probably made in the same factory as one of the others.

Walker or Hooker $33+
Hedman 37+

The cheapest magnaflow is basically a cherry bomb, $63. Notice how big their name is. That shit costs.
