Took a few pics today after loading up the bikes on the back of my 2015 Land Cruiser.

Hope this answers a few fit and setup questions for folks. This is truly the best bike rack on the market today. As an engineer, its easy to have an appreciation for it. Worth every penny. If you have any specific questions go ahead and ask.

Setup details:
  • 2015 Land Cruiser - Factory 2" hitch
  • 1Up USA Super Duty single place rack with single Super Duty add-on
  • Fat Tire Kit installed in rack closest to vehicle
  • Bikes shown are 56cm Specialized Crux and 49cm KinesisUK Crosslight Pro6

A friend told me these are the Land Cruisers of bike racks! Glad you love it. They are so well made and thought out. Did you consider getting a lock from 1up or just using a cable? Haven’t needed to lock our bikes yet on the rack but I’m sure we will.

Thanks to this forum for the advice - I bought one - very happy with mine also.....

Purchased the 2nd carrier which I haven't bolted on yet. Did get the wheel locks, but
use a Kryptonite "U" type lock additionally to secure the rear wheel to the frame.

With the wheel locks, somebody with enough time could disconnect the wheels from the frame etc. They are a deterrent
for sure but not a total security solution for me.

A internal ball bearing inside the hitch wedges itself against the inside of the 2" receiver so
when you tighten the security hex bolt w/pin to lock the hitch in place it makes sure there is absolutely no rattle!

There is also a keyed through bolt that goes horizontally though the 2" Land Cruiser's receiver for safety just in case.

Very nice. . .I'm almost ready to pull the trigger on a 1Up myself. I just haven't quite given up on a roof mounted solution (would save me from having to mount a receiver on the back of our travel trailer, adjust tongue weight, etc.).

I'm thinking of re-purposing a Thule Hullavator and mounting bike trays (possibly 1Up trays) across the two arms. Bikes would have to be loaded sideways, but the way the 1Up grabs the tires would make it fairly easy. Hope I'm not inadvertently hijacking your thread. . .

FWIW......1up has roof mounted versions also that bolt on to existing crossbars.

Yes, that's what I was thinking. Their flush rooftop tray would bolt right to the t-slot on the Hullavtor.

I'm too short to lift the bikes up on the roof, even with a small ladder.

As far as locking it - I feel that locks are for honest people. A determined thief would be able to have your bike off any rack/lock in about 30 seconds with a cordless angle grinder. Hell, I have an M18 cordless angle grinder and cutoff wheel and that thing is a bad bitch! The 1UP is unconventional enough as it is to slow down a casual or opportunistic thief.

I try not to leave myself in a situation where I would be prone to bike theft. Taking a bike to a big biking event or leaving it a few hours at street parking? Leave the rack at home, bike goes laid down in the rear with the back seats up.

Parking at work? Bike comes off the rack and goes inside with me, rack is a lot cheaper to replace than the bike. Same story if staying at a hotel overnight, bikes come off and go in the room.

I don't make a habit out of stopping for errands on the way to or from places with my bikes on my car, and if I do, its always backed in up against a wall, ideally where I can keep eyes on it if running into a gas station or similar.

If we were doing a multi-day tour with bikes on the car I would probably look at something different but for now the best defense is being smart about where you leave your bike.

Great Photos. I'm looking at upgrading my rear rack because the one I have doesn't play well with the lower tailgate of the cruiser. I think you've made my decision clear when the time comes.

Without the fat tire kit you could get it stuck in another 3/4" or so - the arms for the fat tire kit are wider so the rack has to sit further from the vehicle. Good news is my Crux with 35mm tires fits just as nice as my Fat Boy with 4.6" tires. Once the fat bike spacers are installed they can stay in place. Have had no issues at all with skinny tires.

Also super nice on 1Up with the jam ball arrangement vs a pin. You need the infinite adjustability to set the rack juuuuust deep enough where the lower gate misses the rack without sticking out too far.

Good info, thanks! I don't plan on the fat tire kit, I run 29x2.5 or smaller on every bike I have. No snow around here to speak of. I currently only need 2 bikes, but the kids are growing so being able to add on is key. Plus the one-up doesn't seem to stick out as far as the KUAT in either down or folded up mode.

^Cool looking bikes. What brand are they?

We got the rad rover mainly for the fat tires it came with. So far really happy with them, but boy are they heavy. Took my wife a little while to get used to, but the kiddo sure loves it.

I’ve had a 1Up for about 7 years now. Love it. 1 + 1 config same as you. I’ve carried MTB and road bikes on multiple 3k+ road trips. Has always worked great.

I love mine as well. There are few things in this world that you purchase nowadays and say out loud (even if no one is listening)…"Dang, that thing is worth every bit of what I paid for it!"

I also love my 1-up. Super bomb proof. Dropped the rig on it a couple times - only a few scrapes to show for it. One of the best things I did though was purchase a Wilco Offroad Hitchswing. Not only did it improve my departure angle it made accessing the rear so easy!
