Hi all,
Just considering my options to swap out a 1PZ for a 1HD-FT - research suggests it would be a good option performance wise.

Now I need to know ...
Will a 1HD-FT fit into a '91 Landcruiser LX
Would I be looking for a H151 tranny to go with it? Yes manual 5 spd preferred.
Anything else I need to consider?

Appreciate any advice or posts you can point me to
Cheers

Probably issue would be weight. A 1HDFT and H151 is a pretty heavy combo compared to the 1PZ R151.

that said, the FT is probably the best Diesel engine to swap into an early cruiser (apart from the cost) so could be a good choice.

Yeh true, i wonder what the difference is - bound to be a Q in the forum on that one
So is the general rule to beef up suspension to combat the weight difference?
Yeh its always a weigh up between cost & benefit eh

I was trying to find some concrete evidence rather than just peoples opinions but haven’t found much (haven’t had much time to look either).

there seems to be around a 150kg difference although if you add an intercooler etc it’s probably more again. The issue is if you’re running a steel bullbar and winch the total weight could easily be 250-300kg over stock.
I’m not familiar with your specific vehicle, but you’ll need to check the load rating on the front axle to ensure it can handle that sort of weight. You will be able to get springs with that load rating, but if you are exceeding the legal axle weight that could cause problems with insurance and registration. Of course you could physically exceed that limit, just be aware of the potential consequences.

Cheers for your thoughts - not running too heavier gear on the front now, but thats good to consider. Be interesting to know if i need to get certified with that engine mod weight difference too.

any thoughts on keeping the 1PZ and chucking a turbo on it, along with a beefed up tranny?
This option I'll need to manage the increased heat generated by the after market turbo, install intercooler etc

Do a bit of a search but you can turbo the 1PZ with good reliable results, but it depends how much boost/power you want.

if you chuck a turbo on with a decent flowing exhaust, intercooler and possibly larger Airbox (not sure how big the stock one is) and run say 6psi or so it should give a decent power gain without risking the motor. (And be relatively cheap to do it).

however it’s an indirect injection engine so I wouldn’t recommend pushing boost levels too high.

also, apparently the dual mass flywheel can be an issue, so would strongly recommend swapping in a H151 and flywheel/clutch from a landcruiser. (Not sure if the landcruiser flywheel will bolt up, you’ll need to do some research).

It really comes down to how much power you want...

If you want turbo, go direct injection (1hdt). As far as the extra weight goes, not a big deal; just upgrade the front springs. Frame etc. is up to the task.

The 1PZ would be ok with a turbo too, as long as you don't load it heavily for long periods of time (ie. towing a camper trailer or other heavy load regularly)

I'm in the same boat at the moment with a lx trim 1990 pzj70 in New Zealand with some engine issues. Where bouts in New Zealand you based because if you end up selling the damaged motor I could be keen to buy it.

As for an engine swap I've been researching quite a bit on this and there's a few things you can do.

1. Fix 1pz and turbo it. They can go quite good turbo'd when setup right. Something like a CT12B off a 1KZTE goes good for off road when you want some quick spool up time. You can even rebuild the gearbox using some parts from Marlin Crawler to help fix some of the weak points in the R151F transmission and even do some mods at the same time like a 5th gear upgrade from a R452 dyna as this is a lower ratio and should reduce highway cruising revs for better economy.

2. Swap in a 1hz or 1hdt and keep the R151f. Lots of guys in aus run the r151f behind turbo'd 1hzs and they go quite well. You can swap out the dual mass flywheel with a 1hz clutch and flywheel setup and this should work for either the 1hz or 1hdt.

3. You can try and source a H55F trans from a 1HZ landcruiser as they have a slightly different input shaft from the H55fs from a b series motor. Then run it with a 1hz, 1hdt, or 1hdft. This gearbox is quite good because it's much smaller than the H151F and came out in these older landcruisers factory so you can find crossmembers and parts quite easy.

4. You can spend a ton of money and swap in a H151F and a 1HDFT. If I had a ton of money this is what I'd do but I don't. This setup may be a little rough on the 8 inch front axle but should work out fine. Keep in mind though the H151F is a big gearbox and some modification to the transmission tunnel will likely be needed to make it fit properly. Additionally other costs such as driveshafts etc make this quite the expensive swap but if you've got the coin then go for it.
