Ok so the strip down and rebuild is progressing well. Just wondering if anyone has used the standard HZJ75 wiring harness with dual tanks for a 2H engine. I have picked up a body from a HZJ with the entire dash etc. and figure if the harness is not to bad to modify it may be easier than stripping down the whole dash. Anyone done this before and was it that difficult?

Any tips for young players would be appreciated! I will be putting up a build thread sometime soon showing you what can be done (hopefully) with limited tools and space :)

Cheers

Apparently should be not much fancy here and there. But do concern with the sockets between the HJ and HZJ.:D

if you are asking if the wiring harness to the engine compartment can be utilized for the 2H engine.
depends on where the sending units are located as to whether you need to lengthen or shorten the harness there.
it won't be rocket science and if in doubt use the sending units from the 1HZ and mount them into the holes on the 2H.

Cheers guys. Yeah the engine wiring harness Crushers. Im just trying to avoid pulling down the entire dash and re-assembling in the HZJ body tub. I will give a bit of info on how i go and what route i go down when i come to that stage!

Cheers

There are differences in the engine bay 2h to 1hz. for example the oil pressure sender is on the opposite side along with the starter motor, and fuel system wiring is different. There are probably differences else where.

The easiest way will be to swap the HJ dash and wiring into it, and then if you are going to use any HZJ features like the dual tanks, integrate that into the HJ loom.

so changing an entire harness is easier than lengthening a half dozen wires?
 up to you.

I guess if you have the whole vehicle apart the loom should come out and lay into the new body easy then every thing gos into it's proper place , so long as the original loom hasnt been hacked and had dodgy add ons joined to it , I'd prefer to keep the hj loom,

it will be interesting to see how a 70 dash pod mates up with a 60 series wiring harness ...

Did I miss something about a 60 series conversion

hummm, i went back and read the original post again ... duh.
i could have sworn i read he was using a 60 chassis... my bad, ignore me and carry on.

Just stating the obvious differences and that there could be other differences elsewhere.

Download the manuals for both HJ and HZJ and compare the wiring. If that is too much to handle, swapping the looms will be the easy way. It's not as if the 70 series dash is a complex thing to dismantle.

Chucking it all together and hoping it will work is a pretty poor approach to any job.

Or sit and wait for someone who has actually done the job before to comment.

hey Dicky, read my last post again ...

how many wiring harnesses have you actually changed out? just curious. how long did it take you?

now, how many of the switches use the same plug from pre 1990 to post 1990?

just curious how much actual hands on experience you have doing this swap that is being asked about...

I have the factory electrical wiring diagram for the post 1990 HZJ, if you had one for the pre 1990 HJ then you could work through both comparing connector types and individual loom wire functions.

Simon,

I am going to compare outputs etc. when i pick the new body up this thursday. From what i have seen things look very similar. I am not so worried about the charging and starting circuits as i have redone those on yachts a fair bit. It is all the sensors and 'ancillary items' (their seems to be a lot of wires for a relatively simple engine). Once again thanks for all the advice and if i need that document i will pm you simon!

Cheers

The Harness.

My dear fellow. It will take you a day to stripp out the dash, change the harness and refit the dash. there is a lot of difference in the 2. The edit motor, glow systom, oil shut off, alinaitor systom, dash cluster 2pin to a 3 pin and heaps more.Everthing is oppersite sides on the engine. I have been working on both models for 8 years and no way would i even try to convert one to make it all work how it should. :hhmm:

Well put, I did a couple in a row few years back and made a small section of harness by getting 4 rolls of different coloured wires and stretching out several feet and looming it.

Ran the wire to the appropriate spot and wire to alt etc.

Most engines were converted to 12 volt, starter, alternator, fuel pump seem to work on both 12 and 24....

Yes it can be done, as you have done it. And it took you a willle to get it all sorted. He has a harness, use the hj harness , steel dash and cluster and all bolts and plugs in and works first time. The easy way.
