Sorry I'm late with your answer .. but yes cul be and is in fact a air leak. I can ear perfect my tubro even with or without intercooler ..

The intercooler in my case don't mean really down on EGT but yest better boost with the same amount of fuel .. at my IP

ok, got it tuned now, works great, using 12 pounds boost - lots of kick egt's dont go up as high and as fast now, not too much black smoke - not sure how much is too much - or not enough. I get some black smoke when I punch it and can maybe see a bit when accelerating - but not at cruise.

Will keep playing with it and get a dyno next week.

Thanks very much! I love my truck.

The turbo is based on a GT32 but I dont give all the particulars as I am selling kits for the 1HZ now.

I'll try to get a video up soon - the thing is - i just added the intercooler and can't hear my tubro anymore:( But lotsa power.

Great to hear you found the leak.
But that turbo you've got is T3 based, it's got nothing in common with a garrett GT32.

I just got my truck back on the road, my home rebuilt turbo has done 700km without a hiccup. Guess I can stop carrying around a spare turbo now.:)

I've got boost from 1200rpm and full boost from 1500. Went to 19psi to keep EGT's under control but will probably back it down to 17. No intercooler yet. No black smoke, just a slight grey puff if I boot it from standstill in second, which spins the back wheels on anything but bone dry tarmac.

When's the next dyno run?

Still tweeking it here, probably dyno it next wednesday or so. Why would I not hear my turbo anymore? Sound getting sucked up by the intercooler and piping?

Could just be more joins/couplers to damp out the noise.

Ok, intercooler installed, some tweaking was done, this thing rocks now! 15 pounds boost, the EGTS get to 900 - 950 fast and then stays there and slowly climbs after that - presumably the truck moving fast is making the intercooler work.

I eliminated some quick assembling silicone joints, made up an extra intercooler and piping setup for someone if they want it. The pipe from the turbo tot he intercooler is 2 inch, the pipe from the intercooler tot he intake is 2.5 inch. Everything is TIG'd now and looks pretty good. I've added a pic of the intercooler before the pipes were tig'd, will get some better pictures when the muffler is complete.

I went ahead and ordered an Aeroturbine muffler http://www.aeroexhaust.com/ and all the 3 inch stainless piping I should need - mandrel bends included. I am sure the 3 inch will make a ton of difference. I currently have 2 inch stainless no mandrel bent exhaust with the OEM muffler section.

So, almost ready for the Dyno, but I want the 3 inch on before I do it.

Was offroading the other day with the turbo in - I don't need to downshift anymore, just add more pedal and the truck climbs or doesn't bog in the mud at all - very nice.

Regards,

Louis

thats a pretty clean install there M8...

too bad you are parking it for the winter, i am itching for a winter run in Ontario...

Well, I'm going to buy an HZJ73 in the near future - until that gets here I will be driving the HZJ79. So, I'll be in for a winter run when you are in Ontario.

LOL, well, this is an experiment for me now. I am putting turbo kits together for 1HZ's now, I'll post a picture of the whole kit when I get a chance - starting to look pretty good.

Very nice. Your welds?

LOL, easy now, yes those are my popcorn welds. I just MIG'd them quickly to get the pattern I needed.

My kits are pro TIG welded, I will post pics of the intercooler kit and the turbo kit as soon as my other pipes are in.

depending on the price i might be interested in the turbo and intercooler kits...

(or i can still bring the parts in from Alberta but i do like to support local companies)

Once I have the final parts and pieces all tallied up I will put a solid price on it - we can talk.

Looks good louis. I cant wait to do something like this with a diesel or two of mine...

You mention that you have an extra intercooler and piping setup to sell. PM me if so.

OK, took a picture of my turbo kit that Iam putting together fro some guys. For the most part it is all there except the adapter plate, the toyota OEM airbox cover and pipe, and a few little nuts and bolts - I am waiting for delivery any day now.

Im interested. What turbo are you using again? I have a 1994 HZ in my truck.

It is a garrett turbo, I keep the particulars quiet as this has been a big project of mine with alot of time and money involved. I will say that it is bigger than pretty much all of the turbo's being used on 1HZ's today - and works great! I love my truck now, it pulls up hills and runs like a diesel should. I can even pass people on hills. The intercooler really helps in this application too - but not required.
