ball bearing turbos are a newer technology. They are supposed to be lower friction for quicker spool and longer lasting than the traditional floating/bushing type.
after a chat with my turbo guy, the bearing type are for longevity for higher boost engines. if under 14 psi then the bushing is a fine setup. if above 14 psi then the bearing type will last 10 times as long and are about twice the price.
cheers

u mean you have seen dort on the pipe intake? Thats weirf i dont see mine. mine is clean. You probably seen the one that they didnt put on the oil on the filter itself. or not enough of it.

Here's the info I have on air filter performance. Tests were done using SAE J726C Test Method 5-best --> 1-worst
Oiled foam (AMSOIL,UNI) Paper Oil Bath Oiled Gauze (K&N)
Large particle efficiency 5 5 5 4
Small particle efficiency 5 4 1 2
Airflow capacity 5 2 3 5
Dust holding capacity 4 2 5 2
Load up characteristic 4 1 5 1
Backfire characteristic 3 2 5 3
Cleanability 4 1 4 3

As you can see, K&Ns are great for airflow, which is what they were designed for. Their original application was on racing engines, where airflow is important and ultimate engine life was of little consern. They are not as good at filtering as paper or oiled foam types.

stasis, it might be that you can't see the particals. you could get an oil analysis done to see how much silica youmotor has eaten in the period of your last oil change... that would let you know if they are filtering as effectively.

turbo wise, i disagree that they should guard that secret... it's not like most turbo guru's couldn't walk in, pose as a customer, and look at the housing and at least get a real good idea of what their running.

for a customer, it is a good question to answer, because they can go ahead and research things like longevity of the turbo unit, servicability, price for rebuilds, and then decide if that's what they want.

most other turbo kit guys will tell you what turbo it is.

Will chase down a lab to do the oil analysis. But ijsut change my oil about sad 4k ago. So i dont know how accurate it is.

For the turbo true they shouldnt guard it as a secret cos we need to know what the whack on onto our engine.

RE the K& N, filters I have not seen a test done after the used filter has been washed and reused, compared to a new paper filter.LOL. I wonder why, same for king dragon and the rest. This has been an ongoing arguement on the performance V8 forums for years. Isn't it strange that the blokes who claim the biggest performance gains are those who have a stock well worn motor,  never thought to change the filter before:D .Wonder why it sounded like Mums vacuum cleaner trying to suck in a canetoad.

hahah i like the cane tos thing:bounce:. But K&N also has been aroung for donkey years. If they are that bad i think they will be out of business by now. Instead of growing into one of the largest well know air filter manufacturer. We can surgue on&on. Tests and real life experience is another.

Guys i have ran with K&N filter in my LC 100 series for 16000k by now. I just took out my intake pipe the one rite after the filter. Meaning right after the air has been filter squeky clean:D. So some @&@&@&@& has pass through the filter like my excavator then im F@#$#h=d!! So i dont really know what to say. But im just exchanging my point of wiew and what i have seen for myself over there years.

Yep have used a few in my day also. But prefer a new paper element each time now.The same argument is put forward by blokes about pod filters, but dyno figures usually show a good ciu lets the motor develop more HP.Hot air does not make HP.Shows better on a hot road in hot weather. Does your K&N look like new after being washed a few times,, do you wash it or pay $100.00 each time?? Just wondering. My personal opinion is it is clever marketing and K &N s approach to sponsoring performance cars that has led to their success.Ever wondered why performance cars that are competing run the badges but no aircleaner. LOL I think both of us know its far easier to blow out a paper element each day or each couple of days in dusty conditions especially if travelling in convey. LOL..

hahahah:grinpimp: i know hat you mean. Yea by now o think i washed and reoiled my K&N filter 8x now. Still looks like new. Probably i will reuse it for a couple of times then i will change another K&N:D

nothing to add except to say that has to be a distinctive sound, yet i can imagine it...
