Mudholed my HDJ-81 for a while and after getting pulled out the dash went christmas on me indicating an alternator problem. The starter was in muddy water for about 20 minutes so I started there. Pulled it out and had it rebuilt. Put it back in and clicked but didn't turn over. Noticed a random wire that was fried on battery No.2 + side so repaired it and tried again.

Engine started but starter continued to run. had to disconnect batteries to stop starter and engine.

Thinking the wire was maybe PO's fudge. When starter was rebuilt things were so burnt it had to be totally overhauled.

Now I'm thinking it's the 12/24 solenoid (haven't bench tested it yet) and am thinking it won't turn over because it's not seeing 24V.

Anyone with a similiar experience?

Easy stuff first.
Confirm all connections are clean and tight at batteries.
Confirn solenoid plug at skirting is clean and tight, this one sometimes gets dirty.
Make certain the fusible link is good!
A test light is not sufficient. Another issue is the feed from the fusible link where it disappears under the wiper fluid container.
I wired a new fusible link wire to the starter rely in order to bypass the above issue. Also installed a fused momentary switch to the relay feed which allows 12 volt starting in emergency or 24 via the key.
You can always jumper at the starter to verify that the starter works and work your way back up the line from the starter
Check the plugs between starter and the starter relay(in fender) as one looks for neutral just to make life interesting.

Good luck

Yeah cleaned and tested conductivity at all connections. Eventually I found there was no starter signal from the ignition switch to the starter relay so I rewired the starter relay that the PO had installed. I think he burnt out the wiring by wiring it in as 12V to the starter instead of 24 V. In this case I bypassed the ignition switch and used the 12/24V relay (the 0/12V post) to energize the starter relay coil, and used the 12/24V post to go to the Terminal 50 wire on the starter. Still getting Christmas lights even after cleaning Alternator plug. So it appears there's a separate charging issue. Lights go off if I pull the 7.5A CHARGE fuse. Work in progress but solved the starter problem anyway.

WARNING: This works but bypasses the Transmission Lever Neutral Switch
