Hey Gang-

For the first time in my life I ran out of fuel last week. I was embarrassed as all hell as it happened to be in morning commute traffic. Fortunately, I was able to get out of the travel lanes and into a reasonable parking spot along the road. Seems how I am in the Bay Area, I took one of those silly scooters to go fetch my jerry can from my house and fuel up.

5 gallons of fuel and no shortage of strange looks--a baseline behavior I am conditioned to in an RHD truck--I got the truck running without issue.

Fast forward 24 hrs to my first open highway drive since the incident, I am shocked to find that revs won't go over 2500 rpm, and it is slow to get there. Kicking down into third on even the slightest incline was mandatory.

I knew something was awry and I immediately suspected fuel filter given that the particulates and other gunk that are usually floating at the top and bottom of the tank had the unique opportunity to make it through the fuel lines up the filter. Suspected that this journey through the filter likely caused some build up and thus lesser pressure at the IP.

Drove my not-so-water-tight 914 until the new filter arrived.

Fortunately, my theory proved correct and with the new filter fitted (20k kms since last replacement) all was well. No hesitation, easily hit 120km/h during freeway test.

One disturbing thing that I observed during the procedure was fuel leaking from the seal on the primer pump as I pressurized. Is that something to worry about? Seems like a mechanism for air to enter the system.

What replacement parts do folks recommend?

Also, given that I think that this vehicle is fitted with a flow rate sensor on the IP side of the fuel filter, should I have had a light in the cluster letting me know that things were backed up?

Thanks for any input!

I would replace the whole unit, they are not that expensive and Im not even sure you can fix them. I haven't seen one leak from there before and I think it will leak air into the system.
I think the best addition to these is the OEM pre filter unit. You need the dual filter bracket to go with it.
Im pretty sure some diesel 80 series had these.

Awesome, thanks @roscoFJ73

I’ve seen some units with an analog fuel pressure gauge so you can have a specific reading to go off of.

FWIW, performance seems great post filter swap.

I just replaced a leaky old-style priming filter with a newer style OEM one... is this what you describe as one with an analog fuel pressure guage in it? I'm looking for more info on how this works.

I never worry about gauges and sensors on fuel systems. The pre filter stops a lot of junk getting into the primary filter. When the prefilter gets clogged, you feel the power loss.
