I'm contemplating the posibility of replacing my saltwater damaged gauge cluster for some Autometer mechanical gauges

This brings up a couple of concerns...

1- Where do I get the signal for the tachometer?

2- For oil pressure: should I go with a 0-100 psi or 0-150 psi gauge?

3- For water temp.: should I get the 120-240 degrees Farenheit or 140-280 F?

4- Tranny temp: 100-250 F or 140-280 F?

5- If I have a water temp. gauge and a pyro is there a real need for an oil temp. gauge?

any comments are appreciated...

Hi dude .. I thought that way is your best bet .. so

Oil press 0 - 100 psi
Water Temp 120 - 240 ºF ( I prefeer Cº )
Tranny Tempo 140 - 280 ºF
No I thought water and pyro are enough.

The pick up sensor for the tach is located on the back side of your injector pump. You would have to ask Auto meter if they have a diesel tach that would pick up the signal from your sensor. You could also use a signal converter from Dakota Digital that would allow you to use a regular tach (v8, v6, gas, etc.). You would have to call Dakota Digital to confirm compatibility to you sensor.

Thanks Curious1 ... I called Autometer and they do make a Tach for diesels .... it comes with an inductive probe that starps to the alternator to get the reading .... you have to calibrate it though...

Damn Dakota Digital makes some good stuff .... I always thought their gauges were super expensive but I took a look at their site and the prices aren't bad at all .... I'm just more inclined towards mechanical gauges right now .... hate elctronics ....

Uhuru,

Go to the autometer site and pull up the instructions for their tach. I have not installed the model you show. Make sure it will work on a Toyota alternator.

For whatever it is worth, I have a non-tach 1HZ where a shop had installed an alternator inductive pick up on the body. It works fine with a factory HZJ75 tach, but unfortunately I don't know what brand the shop had used.

damn ... thats some bad news ... thanks for the heads up .... will call Autometer soon!

curious1,

This is all I could find related to diesel tachs ... it is for the #2888 model which I believe has been discontinued ... my best guess would be that they use the same probe for both the #2888 and #3788 ....

from what I read the probe should work .... what do you think?
