Hi team,

I’ve done a fair bit of searching on the forum, but it’s needle in a haystack stuff, so please forgive me if there’s a thread on this topic that I couldn’t find.

I have a 98 1hd-fte, auto. Took it camping last weekend towing a lightweight caravan without any issues (except a/t oil temp light coming on because I forgot to turn o/d off 🤦🏻‍♂️). Parked it up Sunday afternoon and when I jumped in Monday morning I’m getting it cranking and cranking but not firing. Here’s the troubleshooting I’ve done so far:

Hand primed and tried starting. Nothing.
Check fuel lines for blockage. Nothing.
Crack injector line and confirm fuel, fuel pumping through when hand priming.
Sprayed ether into intake - this got it running for about 20 seconds and then died. Back to cranking but not firing.
Called mobile mechanic who did same troubleshooting and had same results.
Sent to diesel mechanic. They had diagnosed it as fuel pump failure and recommended the (very) expensive fuel pump rebuild.

But I’m not 100% sure about this diagnosis. Surely would have had some other kind of signal that the fuel pump was playing up? She ran perfectly all weekend, no loss of power, no clicking, nothing but beautiful FTE bliss.

I’ve spoken to a few people who have suggested the following:

Emergency shut off valve not ‘disengaging’.
Cam sensor buggered
One of the fuel pump sensors buggered.

I don’t have a diagnostic tool and before I send it for the very expense fuel pump rebuild/replacement I thought I would ask here. Any advice appreciated.

Vehicle located in Auckland, NZ.

Thank you.

not sure on HDTFE, but other Toyota diesels will not fire up of oil pressure is low or no signal. Check oil pressure sensor

Did u have any luck getting it fixed? I had the same thing, it was a plug below the oil filter that feeds power to the ecm and the pump. This plug had a broken wire. I made a YouTube video about it. I’m based in Thames. Btw, your trans light should not come on if towing. I’ve towed hundreds of thousands on clicks in my hundy in overdrive, no problem. Your trans might need checking or make sure you’ve got enough oil in it.

Hello, I'm from Tanzania and have similar problem. Can you please share link of the youtube video. Thanks

I did eventually find the problem. It was a dodgy wire on what I assume is the fuel pressure sensor that is located on the top of the fuel pump near the injector lines. I've had it desoldered and it's holding for now. Diesel mechanic explained that these are not replaceable items and requires a fuel pump rebuild ($5k ish), but my fuel pump works fine, it's just this dodgy wire someone obviously broke it being rough and it's only just holding on.

I haven't been on a trip since the last time the trans cooler light came on, but there's plenty of fresh oil in there so I'm not sure what the problem is. Apparently the mechanic who did a tonne of work on this rig explained the PO clocked the previous trans and he put a brand new second hand one in there. Not sure if the trans temp sensor is the issue or not. Always something on these old girls!
