If anyone was wondering, you can drive an HDJ81 a REALLY long time with almost no battery power. My alternator went out 6 hours from home and after I jumped it, it drove all the way home. The whole dash was dead, I had to shift manually and not having a radio kind of sucked but it drove all the way into my driveway. I’m calling it a confidence building exercise. It was pretty cool having a major failure and being pretty much unaffected. Mechanical injection for the win?

Once battery is fully depleted it will be long gone. I think the fuel cut will work down to round 9volts.

After that it’s as if you turned your key off.

Yeah, Diesels are great like that.
I drove a VW diesel from South Carolina to Orlando with a non-functioning alternator, and it only took two batteries and a jump box. I bought a new battery before we left, and swapped it out ~7 hours into the journey at an Autozone. In a VW, the fuel gauge is based on resistance, so I used the fuel gauge as a battery gauge. Started losing headlights about an hour from home, but I made it!
Just make sure to cut all electrical consumers off.
