Hi guys, am a newbie here and new to LC's. I have a 1HDFT 97 LC which has a problem with the idling. Starts up very low and then settles down at about 600 rpm. However as soon as the AC is switched on - it drops and the engine shuts off. Checked the vacuum pump and it works fine but there no vacuum at the point where the AC idle adjust is supposed to come on. Was wondering if anyone can point me to the vacuum piping diagrams online for this model.

Also, if anyone can point me to any sites where I can order ACL BEB's for this model - I would be very very grateful.

Thanks a ton

Is this a ATM or MTM truck? The idle spec is different for each.. At any rate, adjust the idle as per factory manual to get that where it should be.
Then put a manual vacuum tool on the line to the idle up pot and activate it manually, if it functions and
corrects the stalling at idle w/AC issue then you have to look at:
A) Whether the idle up VSV works.
B) Whether the idle up VSV is getting voltage when the AC is turned on. If not.. then you have to get out the EWD and trace it further further into the system.

I have run AC on my 1HD-T A442F 80 series w/o any AC idle up function and even with the idle set lower than spec it never would stall.

Here is the Vacuum pipe diagram for non EGR spec 1HD-FT

Thanks a ton. Mine is a Manual transmission. Let me go and check on these and have a look at the vacuum hosing as per this diagram and I'll let you know how it goes...thanks again..very useful information.

Thanks a lot for the help !! Found the problem - disconnected vaccuum hosing to the ac idle up actuator doh !!!

Have a knocking sound from my engine that sounds suspiciously like the BEB's might be suspect. Couple of questions:
1. If I had to change the BEB's - is ACL a good choice - what would tbe part number be for the 1HD-FT engine and where could I order it online

2. Is there a size I should be ordering - what I mean is - are there oversizes also or is it just a standard size ?

Hi Sudhir, is it like a "ticking" sound you are hearing? If so, it is not uncommon with the 1HD-FT's, in Oz anyway. Mine does it and to me it sounds like oil-slap. Engine oil-level is spot-on though. To my knowledge the 1HD-FT's didn't have the BEB issue like the 1HD-Ts did. It's a relatively inexpensive job to get the bearings done and if it fixes your knocking sound then it's all good. It would also give you piece of mind. Let us know how you go! :)

Absolutely its a ticking sound. When i bought my LC - the oil pressure was not at the right levels - ie, between 1/4 and 3/4 in normal driving conditions - after I changed the oil pressure sender it improved drastically. Now its at about 3/4 on a hot engine at 2100 rpm. I guess thats about right ?

I guess the only way to be sure is to drop the oil pan and check the BEB's right ?

Sorry, one more thing...I cant find any real oil consumption at all -the level looks like it drops about 1mm after about 5K kms.

That's normal. When your oil heats up it will thin out and your pressure will drop.

Here is some likely useless diesel trivia for you. You can also get oil thickening on a indirect injection engine if you don't change your oil on time and your oil filtering isn't up to the task. The oil loads up with the soot that the detergents have cleaned out and causes the oil to thicken and oil pressure to be above normal. Your direct injection engine is a cleaner engine that the indirect enegine engine like mine, so thickening should never be an issues. It actually should never be a n issue for anyone who changes their oil when they are supposed to.

Phew...finally got the BEB's done last night...all were more or less ok except No 1 - which was marked quite badly and had 1 part eaten into.
Messed up on the plastigauging though - the FSM says to torque to spec and then turn 90degrees and then measure. I didnt and the clearance turned out to be a bit off - it was close to 0.003 inches on the three that I measured. FSM says upto 0.0039 is ok as a max...

I am assuming that the extra 90 degrees turn will bring me closer to spec of 0.0014 to 0.0021 - Thoughts anyone ? yes, I did replace with standard bearings...

Hot idle problems 1HD-FT

My idling problems continue with my 1HD-FT. Engine stalls after having run on the highway for an hour or so as soon as I put the clutch in or allow it to idle. Any ideas folks ?
Let me describe the problem a little bit more. Engine idles fine at start up and at about 600 rpm when at operating temperature. However after having run for some time - maybe an hour or so - the engine stalls when slowing down with the clutch engaged. It also does not idle when hot.

Holy thread resurrection, but I am having a similar issue anyone have any advice?

Thanks,

Dan

Fuel pumps expand when hot and lose pressure. I think the other guy might have been ok if he turned his idle up to 700+.
Some owners seem to think its cool or desirable to have them idling at 100-200rpm below spec and are surprised when it stalls:rolleyes:.

There is also a gadget called a dash pot which is supposed to stop them stalling when deaccellerating but I dont know much about them except they work at the opposite end of the spectrum to the governor.

Check out the acsd (automatic cold start device) apparently can also give trouble and mess around with timing

Hi guys.
I am wondering whether somebody knows what's the idle consuptiom for a 4.2l, 24V, 1HD-FT engine.
Thank you mate in advance.

Fuel consumption at idle?

Re-resurrection!
I have an issue with my idle, it idles too fast after it warms up and the a/c isn’t turned on. If I lug the engine down then just let it idle it’s fine. As soon as I drive then the idle goes fast again. If I run the AC it stays at the low idle, life is great. So easy solution, just run AC always, but not the correct solution… Very annoying. Fast idle is 1200. It’s not the return spring or the a/c cold start vaccum idle up solinoid, it’s something else… could the high pressure pump be at fault somehow? Thanks for any ideas guys!
