I learned on a recent work trip that the AC must be turned off for the temperature needle to remain safely horizontal on steep (L or 4L2), long (nearly 2000'), hot (95*+) ascents. It was far from overheating, but windows down and moondust made me wonder about solutions. The cooling system is only a few years old. I tend to avoid the hot months in the desert, so this is the first I'd experienced this.

I've read similar accounts of 1FZ-FE 80 owners backing off the AC amidst low speed laboring in summer desert heat. Have you Phoenix and Tucson 1FZ-FE owners identified particular radiator models or other system components that provide cooling sufficient for use of AC in such extreme conditions? Thanks in advance.

There are folks who can answer this better than I can, but I think fan/shroud need to be in top shape, the fan clutch can be ‘upgraded’ and an electric fan from a 100 Series can be added for low speed help.

Mostly fan clutch if everything else is in good condition. If the timing is turned up too much it will run hot. You dont have to worry about turning the AC off, the truck will do it for you if it gets close to overheating. Let me know if you want me to check it out, I have done a lot to mine to keep it cool when I lived in PHX and know quite a few tricks.

If AC cuts off its a sign of overheating engine. There is a temp sensor on the engine that cuts out the AC circuit. A good Koyo rad and fan clutch modified with the 10k-15k oil, you should be worry free. Works in the GCC and in Texas.

For me the ultimate cooling FZJ receipt for Hwy travel
1 - Fan clutch mod
2 - Seal radiator shrowd
3 - Only 1gal Toyota red
4 - Clean all radiators - soak with Simple Green
5 - Underhood seal
6 - Radiator to cowl seal
7 - I run radiator side shields
8 - RPM Never hit the bottom of a hill under 3K. I have zero issues running 2nd gear at 4400rpm all day long.
Side note: If your temp gauge moves from its normal position its too late you are overheating and needs to be addressed.
Video done in July going up Slate Creek (7% grade) between Payson and Phoenix. Take note of the engine water temp.
Note: I run stock gears and 35's:flipoff2:
