Hey guys,

Ive just finished installing a new rear third member (and seals, bearings, brake shoes, etc) on my son’s 4Runner because the gear oil leaked out through the inner axle seal, cratering the rear differential when it ran dry. This is a common issue with these trucks as I’ve recently learned. The rear end completely locked up when this happened.

Now that I’ve got it all back together, the transfer case won’t work in 2 high. In fact, it acts like it’s in neutral and won’t engage the drivetrain. 4 high and low work fine, although it grinds a good bit going into 4 high. Could something have been damaged from when the rear end locked up? I know that it’s certainly possible, but need some input from experts on these t-cases.

This is an automatic transmission, Limited, non-locked rear diff. Any help would be much appreciated.
