Drove about an hour on the highway and made 2 stops, shut off just fine at each stop.

I was unloading stuff and noticed the dash lights and buzzer as if the key was still in the ignition.

Figured I'd just start it and turn it back off.....

Was able to turn key to off position and remove it multiple times and the engine kept running.

DC'd the battery and the engine kept running.

As I was contemplating taking the air intake off the engine cut out, I am guessing the fuel in the lines was exhausted.

I've searched and searched and can find plenty of 80s not turning on, but no results of them not turning off.

1996 1fz-ze with just shy of 180k miles.

It is warm here central Ohio today with a heat advisory and Temps 90-95

Any ideas?

In the future you could probably pull a fuse or so, but does sound like an ignition switch situation.

mine did a similar thing many years back and it was the starter solenoid that was the cause. I think when iits bridged it also applied power to the ecu through the signal wire and kept the thing running. I disconnected the battery and it kept running but didnt stop until I whacked the starter with an axe

Generally when the starter contacts become welded together the starter continues to run also, but if it's just the engine
running with the key removed it's likely something else.

@Cluelessmedic : Does the key when put into the ignition cylinder feel like there's no spring-back when you turn it to the ON position and release??
ie: does it turn loosely left and right like there's no stops, return, no resistance??

If so then the tip of a rod inside the ignition cylinder may have snapped off.

Here's the link to thread below:

There's a ton of good information in that thread (don't blow through it) but basically
you have to remove the ignition cylinder and disconnect the actual ignition switch attached to the rear of the Steering Bracket (barrel)
that holds the ignition cylinder and then replace the ignition rod.

The only way to get a replacement ignition cylinder rod in the past was to buy the whole Steering Bracket but that assembly is now NLA AFAIK so only source would be a salvage yard or part out (See Classifieds Parting Out).

It was discussed previously that it would be great if someone could make a run of the rods (see photo below) but nothing came of it as of yet.

Here's a photo of the tip of a good ignition rod and one with a broken tip (it's all discussed at length in the thread above):

There was no lack of resistance or spring tension with the ignition.

I started it up this morning and it fired right up, idled a little rough for a minute and has been fine since. (I did not attempt to start it after it happened since I was working)

I was able to turn it off and on as normal and haven't been able to re-create the issue

That's even more concerning because you never know when it's going to actually shut the bed.
