Great time wheeling today! Every time I was on the throttle I could hear a pinging noise, when I let off it went away. It got worse and became very loud after wheeling. I was not going hard at all. We can't figure out where it's coming from. Our assumptions were the transfer case, u joints, ring and pinion, who knows but I won't be driving for a while now :(

Nice shots! Everytime I see an 80 without all the crap on the roof it really makes me want to get my luggage rack and rear visor removed. Good looking 80.

Found out what the problem was. Front diff gear teeth were chipped and shaved which means the gear was spinning freely and not connecting. Local mechanic dropped the front axles to get to the the front diff then took the front diff out. But he says he doesn't specialize in fixing gears. I have to buy a new set of gears, So I have to fix it myself or have a 4x4 specialists do it for me. Then bring the whole diff back to mechanic to put everything back together. My luck:( if anyone could tell me how the teeth could possibly wear and chip that would be great so it doesn't happen again.

I love when they don't have the roof racks as well. The 80s I think really resemble the Scouts without them. Great truck!!!

Hey, I test drove that 80 in January. Was nicely set up with gears and ARB air lockers and I really dug the factoy cloth, and no rack. Drove suprisingly well with the amount of lift it had and the addition of the gears. Ended up buying my 80 in Florida and building it myself to avoid any rust concerns that I had.

Sorry about your luck in blowing out your front gear set.

Im guessing it was going to happen eventually. But it will be back on the road early next week. I thought it was going to be worse than I thought. Thank god he air locker was ok

Looking good!

Looks like a good amount of metal on the drain plug. Where they chunks or all fine particles?
