I just pulled my PS rear wheel to check my brakes. I was amazed at how much rust had accumulated on the caliper body. Has anyone just replaced their calipers due to rust? BTW, the pic below is after scrubbing the caliper with a wire brush to remove whatever rust I could. And the caliper does work. Also I noticed my pads are wearing unevenly. It's not bad but the caliper side pad is slightly thicker than the wheel side pad. Should I worry about the rust and the uneven wear?

That caliper might work, but not well.

Replace the whole thing. I doubt you'll even get a core charge back for it, it's pretty far gone (Beno or Cdan could confirm).

Whatever you do to one side, do to the other. So if you replace that one, replace the other as well. If you were getting uneven wear you may want to just bite the bullet and R&R the whole system, new calipers and pads, and replace rotors if they're getting thin. Else you can experience pulling or pulsating when braking.

I ordered new pads and rotors today for both sides. I was debating on the calipers and I think I will replace them both. No point in getting new rotors/pads and then having my rusted calipers fail in the near furure and destroy my new pads/rotors.

WOW, that looks bad, that is alot of scale rust on it. I would take a wire wheel and clean it up and spray it with WD40 before i took it back to get your core $$ back.

I wonder how the pistons and bores look.

BTW RockAuto.com has 3 remaining LEFT rear calipers on closeout for $21.99 no core charge.

That caliper has no core value. That's one of the worst ones I've ever seen. It's past nasty.

Man, those look purdy. Let us know how they turn out.

I just bought the last one. At that price, if it gets me through the rest of winter I'll be happy.
