Last night it drove great and we stopped for about 5 minutes at the beach on our way home. I turned the truck off and 5 minutes later when I went to start it back up nothing happened.

At first I kinda thought we blew the EFI relay becuase of not getting a check engine light. So, I swapped that out and still nothing. I get no power to the gauges besides a red light and the door ajar light. I turned the head lights on for a second to make sure it wasnt the battery and they seemed strong.

I also checked all the fuses in the dash. We also tryed jump starting it w/no luck.

In the end we had to tow it home with the fj60...I am going to pull my FSM out and start trouble shooting it now, but if you guys have any ideas please let me know...

thanks agian,

When my rig did that I fiddled with the wire bundle that travels under the intake at the firewall. I guess it getts alot of heat. It worked for me just pushing the wires around and then it started.
I still need to make the perminent repair, but maybe you can try looking there.
Good luck.
Steven

I by-passed the two fusable links that I could. Also swapped the battery from the battery on the 62, also tryed another EFI relay and double checked all the fuses in the fuse panel.

None of this worked.

If i am thinking correctly, I still dont think its the starter because I am not getting a check engine light or any other warning lights on the dash.

I am kinda running out of Ideas...I am going to search to see if I can find the nuetral saftey switch thing I heard of being a problem...

Agian if you guys got any ideas Im all ears...

Loqutio I tryed it to no avail...thanks anyway...It does seem like a lose wire or a blow fuse still though. maybe a bad ignition switch?????

The first time the truck would just crank and crank.
The second time was at the airport parking lot were the truck wouldn't even crank.
I did have you symptoms though as well as checked all the things you have checked.
Dam I just noticed your working on a 3fe so probubly completely differant. Sorry if I wasted your time.
Good luck
steven

OK, I jumped the starter to the battery and go the truck started. But when I got it started after jumping it, there was no read out from the gauges. Nothing.

The truck seemed to run fine but I shut it off and tryed to start it agian but it did not start( by using the key)

So i guess that rules out the starter.... So I guess I am down to a bad ignition or possibly neutral safety switch which I have no clue where it is at.

if its the neutral safety swith did ya try starting it in neutral??, that switch is usually on the trans some where or kinda in the shifter linkage, hopefully you wont have to buy a new one either bc they're around $2-300 from toyota if i remember right, we almost had to put one into an 87 1 ton pickup(toyota) at work, but ended up fixin it another way

-if you find the nss, trace the harness to a connector and bypass the switch with a jumper to see if thats the problem

Check yor MAF meter my went out on me and the same thing happend the check engine light did not come on, after messing with the MAF I got a check engine light agian, and then she cranked right up.

MAF meter??? what is that?

I pulled the ignition apart to see if there was anything visual wrong. It seemed normal is there a way to check it? or by pass it see if I get guages and start up?

I am really running out of ideas...

I still dont understand why I am not getting any gauge read outs even when the key is on the "on" postition...

Gotcha, Will go mess with it...

My headhurts trying to figure this out.

I hear ya I was in the same boat drove me crazy, Did about everything you described.

LOL, this aint no 60 my friend.

No kidding...I still like the 3fe though. I just have to figure this out. Any word as to where the Neutral safety switch is? Although that would not explain why there is no check engine light or gauge read out.

In the 340 transmission in the 95-97's the neutral safety switch in on top of the transmission. My guess is it would be there for the 440 trannys as well.

You seem to have an electrical issue.
Are you getting a check engine light when cranking?

You might want to check for corrosion or a loose conection at the fuse panels, especialy the box lower left of steering wheel and where the EFI relay is.

good luck

bad ground connection at the battery?

Al,
bump for the ground(s).

The NSS is on the drivers side of the tranny just aft of the bell housing. The wiring runs up over the tranny and the connetions are right next to the starter.

Nope no check engine light, but I swapped batterys for a good one with no luck. Head lights come on strong though. Ive tryed just about every bag in my book.

thanks for the help guys...I really do need it this time.

Ele. problems are hard to solve.

PM me if you'd think emailing you some ele. diagrams from the FSM will help.
