Hey Folks,

Got a new to me 1992 fj80 3F-E and am running through some rough idle diagnostics. I’m waiting for the factory service manual in the mail, but I’m just too excited and I’m wondering if anyone on here has encountered the same issue.

Here’s the question:

When the engine is at top dead center compression #1. Should the pick up coil projection be in direct alignment (point to) the pickup coil?

Note the offset between the pick up coil and the projection with the engine at TDC Compression.

Thanks in advance!

FWIW, rough idle on a 3FE is almost always an air leak. The top half of the motor wants to be air tight. Make sure there's no cracks in the intake plenum. They will often crack when lifting the lid of the air cleaner, especially if it's 29 years old.
Here's a basic tune up guide:

Thank you Jonheld. This is super helpful. I have found some cracks and am replacing the plenum for sure.
