actually, I have a Ryobi on the shelf...anyone know of an adapter to that tranny?

:flipoff2:

I bet you could get 'John Kerry' to do the swap for you since he has alot of free time on his hands these days.

i have a 93 my brother has a 91. i have driven both a lot and low level wrenched on both. for that price the 91 is a great solid truck unless it is thrashed. You will need to throw a few PM parts at it and you may find significant power gain from things like a tune up, new air filter and replacement fuel pump regulator. however you will never get a rocket.

the 93 goes faster and stops better. the f/r locker option is also better on a 93-97 if you can get it. the tranny on the 93 is smoother and more responsive.

the 91 has no h/g problem.

i think with either truck you should really adopt a modified vw minibus approach and just not compete in traffic but you can do it in the 93. highway is not so bad but in the 91 you can't pass that easily on an uphill passing lane. on a 93 you can but you may have to floor it.

otherwise I see no difference. steering and handling very similar although the 91 is on 15s. engine compartment of a 91 is a little easier to get at things like the vsv. interiors very similar except cloth vs. cracked leather.

i say buy it

If I understand correctly, it would be easier to install a manual behind the 3F. That may influence your choice.

under $3k?

makes it a viable candidate for the SBC at that price...

It is a candidate, but-

For what its worth you could double your money and end up with a 1FZFE, difflocks, 4whl disc + RR FF.
