ok so I've been looking for a cylinder head for my FJ62 since I found a crack last month. I found a few from various places and the reconditioned ones are always 1,000 plus but I just found one on autozones website for 500$ reconditioned. Is this one worst quality compared to say cruiser parts? It just seemed odd that this one is so much cheaper. Here is the link to the part.

Rebuilt 60/62 heads historically have run over $1000 forever.

That autozone price is scary.

When it comes to dealing with the cylinder head, the question that has to be asked is: Do you really want to risk having to tear the whole motor apart again after you put it all back together if you find out that bargain basement head is defective?

I'll answer that question for you.

Hell no.

I can almost guarantee you that whatever head you end up putting back on there, and then finally buttoning up the engine, your main thought when you tighten up the last bolt will be: I am never doing this again (for at least another 6 years anyway).

Yes, another $600 is expensive.. But so is the risk of having to do it all over again.

Kind of like Las Vegas I suppose.
Wanna roll the dice?
Can you afford to lose?

It says it is remanufactured. So it's not like it came out of a hyundai. Call them, I'll bet they don't actually have it. if they do go for it. I just did this and have no desire to do it again but that's a big price difference.

Maybe your best bet is to find a head out of a wrecked vehicle and get it rebuilt or rebuild it yourself. I agree that $1000 seems steep, but I also agree that cheaping out may leave you paying more in the long run. At least if you do the rebuild yourself you know exactly what's going on with every singly piece in that head and you have no doubts as to what has and hasn't been replaced in the interests of saving 2 cents per valve guide seal, right?

$1000 for half an engine? That's a steal, especially considering you'll probably only do it once in your lifetime.

Am I crazy? find a used head in the classifieds and have it rebuilt...can't imagine it costing more than 600-700 including shipping...Now, 1000 for a brand new toyota cast head assembled, yes. Anything Autozone that isn't something that gets burned off during operation is cabbage...

Just pulled my running 3fe and trans for an engine swap. Shoot me an email if interested.
