I've been going through this 1988 4Runner and it's clear I'm not the first person to be messing around the inside of this dash over the years. I'm in process of replacing the coin tray and relocating the rear window defroster switch to over behind the steering wheel, which does work and there is plenty of factory wiring harness to make that work.

I'm swapping the coin tray and switch blank with a product found on Etsy that'll allow me to replace those with a panel and insert 3rd gen 4Runner size switches for some future wish equipment.

But, I've notice that there isn't a duct behind that driver's side air vent.

Is there supposed to be some duct work back there?

And here's the Etsy panel and my future wish switches installed:

Nice job with the switches. I did something different on either side of the steering wheel.

There's two pieces of plastic duct work. It attaches to the 3 way plenum at the heater box. Its the white colored piece.

Then it loops down below the steering column and then angles up to that driver side vent. Some have a little vent attached below the column, some don't. The duct has the place for the vent molded in so you can add one if you find one.

I grabbed these pics from my build thread.

yes. see that tab for the screw?
Yeah, I did, which was another reason I was thinking something was missing. I'm hoping someone has a picture of what I need and possibly how many parts I'm missing. It does have everything for the ducts in the center and on the passenger side. The parts fiche from Toyota lacks a lot in detail for me. Probably because I've been to used to another manufactures display for way to many years.

Anyone know of a unit being parted out that might snatch that duct work from?

Thanks @aztoyman. I expected duct work for the drivers side upper vent. Didn't expect another vent just under the steering wheel.

@pappy, if those rockers you have are 20.8 mm x 38.75 mm, that Etsy panel will work with those switches.

As far as the other side, yeah, I think I've seen your pic of that side as well as few others who have done a nice customization and enhancement. Someone knocked out my Cruise Control cover even there wasn't Cruise Control on this vehicle. I have run across that part on eBay. However, after more research found out that Cruise Control is a bit more involved than getting that box on the 1st Gen 4Runners.

I'm running the same blank from Etsy. Pretty impressed with how well it fit (and how cheap/reasonable 3D printing has made simple things like these).
@BDSeff1fitty, I am to. I even asked the guy who makes that Etsy part about a replacement for the cruise control panel cover as mine was missing. He has the 3D print file for it and knocked one out for me. It'a nice match with the other side.

Does this help?

My 88 standard cab deluxe had it. The 4X4 86 Xtra Cab SR5 and the 2WD 86 Xtra Cab that I just stripped did NOT.

The ducts looked exactly the same. They are molded so you can see where the small vent goes. They just need the opening cut away and there are dimples where the screws go.

Thinking back, my wife's 86 4Runner had the small vent. It was not an SR5. Just a base model 4X4 with automatic trans.
