This is a very clean and well maintained LandCruiser with the original 2F, 4.2L, inline 6-cylinder engine. It has 241,XXX miles and is still running strong. 4WD and transfer case is all solid and working perfectly. It was restored and painted professionally in the original metallic, slate-blue color several years ago. It spent all but the past two years in Southern California and is nearly rust-free. There is one small spot of rust bubbling through the paint near the roof rail on the passenger side rear and one small scrape from a brush with the garage door near the passenger side tail light. Otherwise this truck is in near perfect condition for its age.
The paint shines quite nicely. It has the original chrome bumpers that are nice and shiny as well. There is no rot anywhere else on the body or frame. The fender lips and rocker panels have zero-rust. It is a super-solid rig.
The A/C, heat, lights, and all accessories work flawlessly. It has absolutely perfect, clean, stock, cloth seats with no stains, holes, or rips. The carpets are not perfect, but fairly clean for a truck of this age. The rear cargo area carpet has been replaced and it has newer aftermarket floor mats. The headliner is original and intact with no holes, rips, or stains. The dash has been covered by a nice perfectly fitted aftermarket plastic/vinyl cover and looks just like original with no cracks or sun damage.
The truck runs well and had a recent tune-up with new plugs, wires, distributor cap, fuel filter, and a new fuel pump. Performed regular oil changes with Valvoline synthetic-blend oil.
There are a number of other upgrades and details that make this truck pretty special:
• This truck has been retrofitted with the Toyota H55, 5-speed, manual, overdrive transmission – a vast improvement over the stock 4-speed. This makes it much more drivable on the highway and more capable off-road with the lower first gear.
• Rear disc-brake conversion using parts typical to these models with custom mounting brackets and GM calipers/pads from a 1979 Cadillac El Dorado. This type of caliper has a mechanical parking brake feature that allows you to use the stock parking brake lever and cable system.
• 4” suspension lift with Pro Comp shocks and steering stabilizer bar
• BF Goodrich 285/75/R16 All Terrain T/A side-wall armored tires mounted on 16” powder coated steel wheels with lots of tread left. The matching spare tire and wheel is mounted under the chassis in the rear and has a cable and keyed lock.
• Powder coated black nerf bars welded directly to the frame on both sides – no rust or scars on these either!
• Draw-tite trailer hitch with 3500 lb (ball-mount load) and 6000 lb (weight distributing) tow capacity.
• KC Daylighter, 6” Hi-Lites, chrome, off-road lights mounted through the front bumper wired to their own dashboard switch.
• Replacement front and rear lenses for the marker, tail, brake, and turn signals.
• Tuffy 8" Wide Stereo Security Center Console between front seats. Huge storage capacity in this locking console and an open slot for installing a CB or other radio.
• Dark tinted rear windows and polarized light tinting on driver/passenger windows and windshield.
• Professionally installed Alpine in-dash CD/DVD/GPS-NAV stereo system with a 7” motorized, retractable screen, (4) 6” speakers, a 10” subwoofer, two Alpine amps mounted under the rear bench seat, and a remote interface box mounted under the driver’s seat. It has multiple stereo auxiliary inputs that I use to play music with an Android phone and an iPod interface cable. I don’t have the NAV DVDs, but they can be purchased online easily. Plays DVD movies – passengers in the rear seats can see.
• Replaced the steering wheel with a smaller aftermarket Grant wheel and wired the horn properly. Still have the stock wheel and will include it and an inclinometer as well.

• I have a few more pics, but they are all in a word doc and I am having difficulty copying them. I can get a video together this coming weekend and post it.

Some impressions after driving...

I made a quick 5 hour drive up to MA to drive this rig, and although I didn't end up buying it, I thought it might be useful to share my impressions with those who might be interested*:

*A quick caveat: I am very much a n00b when it comes to LCs in general, and this was my first drive in a 60, so many of my impressions will likely be “duh” moments for the salty dogs among you. I also wasn’t planning on doing a review, so this is my quick, note-less impression. I also should say I’m doing this as a favor to the IH8MUD community, and assume no liability if you buy this rig based on anything said here. Caveat Emptor!

First of all, this is one of the cleanest looking 60s I've seen in my search. Other than the egg-sized rust spot on the roofline and the scrape on the rear quarter that Jeff mentions, the truck is aesthetically solid. The paint shows well. Undercarriage also looks clean. The blacked out trim shows some silver through, but is generally good. The KCs made for great daytime driving lights. It definitely garners attention.

The interior is in exceptional shape, including both front seats. Headliner is clean for its age. With the exception of a single loose panel in the cargo area, all the internal pieces are solid. The Tuffy Box is wicked roomy, too. Useful. The dash looks clean with no cracks. Window tint is worn in some sports but generally in good shape.

Biggest impression, though, goes to the tech that's been installed into this rig. It's got a serious sound system: Alpine speakers and head unit, 2 amps installed covertly, an XM receiver, a Parrot Bluetooth interface, and a sub in the cargo area. If you're an audiophile at all, the sound will impress. This would be a great rig for vacation drives (so long as you’re not in a huge rush - more on that later)

Engine bay looked clean - I didn’t see any obvious leaks or issues, though Jeff did say there is a slow coolant leak somewhere in the system. I stopped short of crawling under the truck, but no drips so far as I could see.

Driving the rig, the smaller aftermarket steering wheel makes for a sporting feel - I thought I’d hate it, actually, but it made a large truck feel more spry. The transmission feels solid, despite a rather high pick-up on the clutch. It took some getting used to as 3rd and 5th gear are pretty close, but I learned quickly. The 4” lift and larger tires certainly give a high driving position (I’m coming from a Saab, cut me some slack), but the rig never felt unstable, even on the highway. The brakes were less confident than I’m used to, but at least they’re discs. Parking brake also seemed functional (though I had a hard time getting the handle to disengage at first). Acceleration is about what you’d expect...not glacial but definitely not winning any drags.

We didn’t get to do any proper off-road testing, but I did engage the hubs and did some low speed tests on a deserted road. Everything seemed to be functioning as expected. Hubs locked and unlocked smoothly, 4H and L both engaged as designed.

So by now you're asking: "Why didn't you buy it, you dingus?"

Good question (and believe me, I waffled). Ultimately, two things made up my mind. One, this being my first drive in a FJ60, I found the highway power just not quite up to my needs. It will cruise at 65+MPH with that 5 speed, but left me wanting. It might push me to eventually get an 80, actually. (a side note - I wish I knew how many miles were on the tranny - it was done before Jeff’s time with it.)

Second thing was, well, it was just too damn NICE for what I need - I’m looking for a base rig that I can leave on the streets of Brooklyn and not lose sleep over, and one I won’t wince at each dent and scratch. The stereo setup was awesome, but honestly all I saw was broken windows and insurance claims (besides, I have TERRIBLE taste in music).

Bottom line: If I had a garage (and a bit of a higher budget), I’d be driving this rig right now.

This is a really nice, clean, straight 60. I’m bummed it wasn’t right for me, but my search continues (probably for a 62 or 80, though...)

Happy to answer any questions that I can, if I missed anything critical.
